CRPF man, 3 civilians injured in rifle grenade attack in Sopore

SRINAGAR, Dec 24: Continuing pace of their strikes in the appletown of Sopore, militants today left four persons wounded in a rifle grenade attack on a CRPF formation. Army claimed to have killed one more Pakistani militant of Lashkar-e-Toiba in an encounter in the same area in north Kashmir.

Informed official sources told Early Times that in the forenoon today militants fired a couple of rifle grenades on a formation of CRPF 179 Bn at Town Hall. Eyewitnesses said that one of the grenades landed well on the main entrance of Town Hall. One CRPF personnel, namely Constable Anil Kumar, besides three civilians, namely Mohammad Ayub Shalla son of Abdul Gaffar resident of Model town Sopore, Bilal Ahmad Langoo son of Mohammad Amin resident of Noorbagh Sopore and Mohammad Ashraf Bhat son of Abdul Samad resident of Rafiabad, sustained injuries.

Among the injured, three persons were treated at Sub District Hospital while as one more with grievous injuries was rushed to a Srinagar hospital.

In recent times, Sopore has witnessed a number of militant strikes, including one RPG attack that destroyed SP Sopore Altaf Khan’s bedroom. SP had a narrow escape in the midnight guerrilla strike. Thereafter, forces eliminated at least four militants in different operations.

Sources said that late last night, troops of 47 Bn Rashtriya Rifles conducted a cordon-and-search operation in forest area of Zaloora in Sopore on a specific information according to which half-a-dozen heavily armed militants were present in Zaloora area.

Sources said that during the search operation one militant got trapped who opened fire and engaged troops in a three-hour-long gunbattle. He was finally shot dead in an open area. Defence sources identified the slain militant as Abdu Obaidullah and claimed that he was a Pakistani national and a member of Lashkar-e-Toiba. Reports said that some residents of a nearby village shouted slogans and rsorted to stone pelting on columns of security forces with the allegation that the Pakistani militant had been captured alive and later killed in custody. Police and armed forces forced the gathering to disperse.
