‘Administrative apathy leaves her in misery’ | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Vaibhavi Chnadel Jammu Dec 25: The narrow streets of Nai Basti lead to H. No 341, a small dingy dwelling where lives a lonely septuagenarian widow Melo, watching li fe slowly passing by at the fag end. Her misery is due to the merciless attitude of the authorities and the political leaders only Air and sunlight seldom find a passage into her ‘house’ more of which is a crumbling structure likely to cave in by a small shudder even. Reluctant to leave her inheritance she still clings on a piece of paper given as an assurance to her by a local MLA to get her house repaired. Putting up in the same condition she is still braving for her fight to get her piece of legacy resurrected, but to only disregard and ignorance from ministers and many bureaucrats. Remembering the days of election Melo says, “ When local MLA Raman Bhalla, who is Relief and rehabilitation Minister, visited our area seeking votes, I got that application marked from him , wherein he wrote to the Deputy Commissioner to sanction the case immediately in , but as the election were over , no one returned to us.” Even her neighbours are quite unhappy with the minister, “On our insistence, the minister though visited her home and even assured that he will provide every sort of help, but even after passage of 2 years, he has not fulfilled his promise,” says Vinod, a neighbour of Melo Devi. Narrating her tale of apathy Melo Devi says, “ When I approached the Deputy Commissioner with the letter marked by the minister and asked him to help me under Indira Vikas Yogna , he told me to go the Municipal Commissioner . On approaching the Municipal Commissioner, he regretted saying that there is no scheme under which there is some provision to rehabilitate the poor and the underprivileged people. He again told me to approach the Deputy Commissioner. Even I approached our Minster, for Relief and Rehabilitation, Raman Bhalla again, but except saying that he had already recommended the case, there was no sigh of relief from his side also”, says Melo Devi. The uncertain widow pension of Rs 200 every month tooo is not a regular income for her. But Melo Devi refuses to give up. At this old age even she manages to wash utensils, clothes and perform rest of the chores at other people houses to make her both ends meet. The poor women not having any social or economic security is much dependant on kind neighbors who look after her whenever she is ill or requires some help. Adding more to the plight is that she is not even included in the BPL ration cards category. “When new ration cards were made, the concerned people came to our area also, but I am unfortunate that I am not having ration card, what to say of BPL ration card”, adds Melo. The crumbling walls, the dilapidated roof, mud accumulated in the room, the logs of woods peeping from the roof top , some heaps of rubble falling every now and then from the roof and some broken furniture is sufficient to narrate the ill-fate of Melo Devi, who resides in that house but no one is ready to sympathize her .
