Need for developing tourism infrastructure in new resorts | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu,Dec 25:-The state Government's ambitious plan of developing new tourist sites in Jammu and Kashmir has yet to take off despite the central Government's allocation of Rs.3.69 crores for development of tourism infrastructure in Gurez. During the last 10 years the successive state governments have been announcing schemes for development of tourism infrastructure not only in Gurez but in Lolab valley, Bungus valley, Basholi-Billawar tourist circuit, Zanskar, Bhaderwah, Kishtwar-Sinthan areas and Botapathri in Gulmarg. However, field reports indicate that there has been no major or marked improvement in the infrastructure in these areas. Over the years, the government continues to sell the Mughal gardens, two lakes, besides the resorts of Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Kokernag and Verinag to the tourists. Experts are of the view that while taking up the plan of development of tourism infrastructure in new areas the Government should ensure developing the road connectivity and the lodging facilities in the shape of huts and hotels in areas like the Lolab, Bungus, Gurez,Kishtwar, Bhaderwah, Basholi and Banni. These experts have suggested to the Government to develop tourism infrastructure at and around Surinsar and Mansar Lakes so that those tourists who fail to make it to the valley could spend time in these two resorts. According to these experts, the Government has remained silent on the progress of the scheme pertaining to the development of 50 hamlets into tourist villages. Despite the fact that a beginning had been made four years ago since then no sizable amount of money has been earmarked for the development of these villages. They said there has been gradual improvement in the security scenario in the state and as such there was need for developing not other existing to resorts but the new areas so that the yet unexplored areas fascinated the visitors to the state. The experts said that mere dependence on the Patnitop resort and the four resorts in the valley was not sufficient attraction for the excursionists who were being lured by tourism promotion activities in Himachal and Uttrakhand states.
