Mir asks officers to popularize cocoon among farmers | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Dec 25: Minister for Agriculture, Ghulam Hassan Mir, called upon the cocoon rearers to come forward in a big way and take the benefits of the schemes launched by the Government for their upliftment. Speaking after planting the mulberry saplings on mulberry plantation week at Banardi Nursary at Kathua today, Mir said that the objective of launching of various welfare schemes for cocoon rearers is to provide them succor. He directed the officers to conduct awareness camps at the block level to acquaint and motivate the people to opt the cocoon rearing as an economic activity. Saying that the Sericulture has a huge potential of employability for job seekers, the Minister stressed upon the rearers to involve more and more people in this cash crop trade as it benefits the people during short period of 20 days. During the inspection of various mulberry nurseries in the district, the Minister was informed that 1.30 lakh mulberry saplings would be planted in the district during this plantation drive. He was further informed that 1.14 lakh kgs of cocoon were produced in the district valuing Rs 1.55 crore during this year. On the occasion Minister distributed cheques worth 75,000 among five beneficiaries, 15,000 each, as a second installment for construction of rearing sheds. He also distributed mulberry saplings among the farmers under CDP scheme. Later, Minister also inspected the Krishi Vidhyan Kendra (KVK) Kathua. The Minister was accompanied by Director Sericulture M A Khan, Scientist Saleem of KVK and other senior officers of Sericulture department.
