| Danish, Mehak bag U-19 titles in inter-school chess | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, December 26: Danish Pathania of KV Nagrota and Mehak Bakshi of SOS Harman bagged boys and girls titles respectively in under-19 category in the two-day inter-school chess tournament, organised by All J&K Chess Association at Hotel Nek, here today.
In under-14 age group, Chatanya Sharma of KC Public and Akriti Kotwal of BSF School emerged winners. First place in under-11 category went to Ritish Pathania of KV Nagrota and Arushi Kotwal of BSF School in boys and girls sections respectively.
In the finals and prize distribution function of this inter-school meet, general secretary of All J&K Chess Association, Baldev Raj was chief guest, who gave away prizes and certificates to position holders in different age groups.
Speaking to the gathering, chief guest disclosed that the winners of each group in both boys and girls sections will attend a special coaching camp, organised by Chess Federation of India in the month of April.
“Otherwise cost around Rs 5,000 per player, the week-long special coaching sessions are being organised by the Federation for the first time to promote the game at the grass root level. We have been asked to send at least 10 boys and girls for the free coaching,” disclosed Baldev Raj.
“The competition was also organised to pick up state teams for the forthcoming school nationals chess championship,” disclosed president of the Association, Atul Kumar.
The competition officiated by current state champion, Ritwan Sountra and assisted by other members of the association.

BOYS: Under-11 yr: Ritish Pathania, KV Nagrota, Ist; Virender Chib, KC Public, 2nd and Karan Kaul, DPS, third. Under-14 yr: Chatanya Sharma, KC Public, Ist; Akhil Manhas, KV Nagrota, 2nd and Nirbhay Sudan, DPS, third. Under-19 yr: Danish Pathania, KV Nagrota, Ist; Pranav Sharma, MHAC Nagbani, 2nd and Sagun Jiwan Malik, Vidyapeeth Public School, third.
GIRLS: Under-11 yr: Arushi Kotwal, BSF School, Ist; Meenal Gupta, KV-I Gandhi Nagar, 2nd; Arushi Sharma, Carmel Convent, third. Under-14 yr: Akriti Kotwal, BSF, Ist; Sonali Manhas, KV Nagrota, 2nd and Mawya Sudan, Carmel Convent, third. Under-19 yr: Mehak Bakshi, SOS Harman, Ist.
