| Bhakra Dam to be Guarded by CISF Personnel | | | AGENCIES
NEW DELHI,Dec 26: One of the highest and important dams -- the Bhakra Nangal -- will soon be guarded by more than 450 CISF personnel to thwart possible terror threat or sabotage attempt.
The government has decided to deploy the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) after analysing the threat to the huge facility, built across Sutlej river and located between Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. It also attracts a large number of tourists and hence a possible threat cannot be ruled out, sources familiar to the development said.
A contingent of 459 CISF personnel has been sanctioned by the Union Home Ministry recently and the deployment will take place soon, they said.
The 226-metres high dam has a crest length (of the rampart) of 518 metres and holds a large water reservoir for production of electricity. It supplies water for drinking and irrigation to six states.
"Any sabotage to the facility could create havoc in the low-lying areas by way of floods. The dam also receives a stream of visitors and hence a proper security set up was essential," sources said.
The CISF personnel will be deployed at vantage points across the dam. They will patrol the reservoir area and its vicinity.
The specially-trained personnel will carry weapons like AK-47s and INSAS rifles and will have a vehicle-borne Quick Reaction Team (QRT) to respond to any emergency.
The reservoir can store about 9,340 million cusecs meter of water.
