Morning walkers track Manda Wildlife Sanctuary | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Dec 26: The unique initiative “Morning Walk with Tree Talk” taken up by the renowned environmentalist, O P Sharma Vidyarthi continued on Sunday with colleges students, research scholars, professors, senior cops, IIIM scientists, environmentalists, senior forest officers, bureaucrats and nature lovers visiting the ‘Green Lung of Manda’. Enthusiasm and zeal of nature lovers was overwhelming when they assembled at Manda to participate in second session of an innovative tree awareness campaign launched last week in the city of temples. The participants took morning walkers’ route to know more intimately the local tree flora of Manda Wildlife Sanctuary. They found trees of various kinds and their English names were enchanted for the youngsters who were quite inquisitive to know unknown facts and nurture desire to correlate fascinating tree names with common animals seen in surroundings. Some of the trees seen in Manda had mind-boggling names like Night Jasmine tree, False Quinine tree, Buffalo Horn tree, Bridal Couch tree, Drumstick tree, Heliotrope tree, Monkey Face tree, Parrot tree, Garlic Pear tree, Golden Shower tree, Intellect tree, Indian Coral tree, Pride of India, Margosa tree and Women’s Tounge tree. Notable Experts who briefed participants about importance of local trees during the course of morning walk included Principal Chief Conservator Forest, R D Tiwari, senior DIG CID, Yoginder Kaul, CCF Mukherjeet Sharma, WWF chairperson, C M Seth, IIIM scientist, Y S Bedi, Ayurvedic Practioner, Shiv Dutt Sharma, Regional Wildlife Warden Upinder Pachnanda, DFO Urban Navin Shah, DFO Zamir, Inderjeet Singh, Rafi Bhatt, O P Bakshi, Ramesh Arora, Ashok Gupta, Dogri writer, Gyaneshwar Sharma and many others. The forest trainees from forest training schools, students, and prominent members of civil society got a deeper insight into the world of trees during wandering through the woods. All participants took keen interest to know rich local, English and scientific nomenclature which was elaborated by O P Sharma Vidyarthi. The knowledge about herbal healing properties was explained by Shiv Dutt Sharma and wildlife associations elucidated by Dr C M Seth. Noted Dogri Poet Gyaneshwer enthralled the participants by his composition on superb beauty of ‘Cassia Fistula ie Amaltaas’ locally called Karoungal followed by Hindi poem ‘Shivalik Ke Hum Budhe Ped’ by O P Sharma Vidyarthi. Vidyarthi said that the popular surge of nature lovers and professionals in special morning walk with tree talk demonstrated inherent love for nature in the heart of citizens, curiosity of knowing local tree names and also their utilities as well as herbal remedies. “The participants in addition were also explained role of trees in mitigating harmful effects of pollution,” he said, adding “The event is gaining popularity among people from all walks of life. The next such event is scheduled to be organised on January 2, 2011 at Environmental Park and Mahamaya Forest “
