Leadership crisis deepens in Jammu region | | | Syed Junaid Hashmi EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Dec 26: Leadership crisis in Jammu region after Amarnath agitation has deepened and people have been virtually left desolated with their issues of social, geographical, economic and political significance. They are looking heavenwards and waiting for the arrival of an Avtaar who would guide them in this hour of crisis and despair. Their faith on the political parties has been shaken time and again. They have been and are searching for a selfless leader who would take their battle for equality, economic empowerment and development to the logical conclusion. Right from 1947, Jammu region has seen emergence and doom of political leadership owing to its peculiar religious, economic and geographical composition. If Jana Sangh leadership was not acceptable to majority of Muslims, National Conference and other regional parties failed to present a respectable and acceptable Muslim face as their leader to the people of Jammu region. More importantly, none of the regional political parties considered Jammu region of any political importance for years together until the year 2008 when owing to Amarnath agitation, Leela Karan Sharma emerged as leader of the masses. However, he could not survive the fame for long and went into bewilderness after he jumped into election fray and unsuccessfully contested parliamentary elections on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket. Thereafter, it has been Aaya Ram Gaya Ram situation. Both BJP and JKNPP alongwith Congress have failed to address the issue of leadership crisis. These political groups are plagued with inter-party divisions and the same can be read on routine basis in almost all the local and national dailies. The leaders of these parties have more affinity with positions they are at within the party and hence, take less interest in taking up a cause and fighting for the same till last breath. Economy is the other main concern of almost every other political leader in Jammu region. Struggle for a cause does figure in the speeches of these leaders but when it comes to practicing the same, they prefer bed of roses. The manner in which vociferous demand for the appointment of local Vice-Chancellor for Central University of Jammu has been abandoned is itself an indicator of how weak and feeble leadership of Jammu region is. Issue is not who has been appointed and who has not been but the broader question is the method in which appointment of Prof.Amitabh Mattoo was resisted and then, the welcome he was accorded on his return to Jammu to take over as first VC of Jammu Central University. Not only this, few are now bothered about delimitation and regional empowerment. The battle was lost long ago and if words are put in right perspective, Jammu lost the opportunity of creating a leadership of its own immediately after BJP hijacked the achievements of Amarnath land agitation. Mattoo is welcome to the city of temples and "Gully and Mohallah" leaders but it needs to be reiterated that Jammu is still searching for a leader who can withstand political pressure situations and take logical political positions when it is required the most. BJP, Congress, JKNPP and other smaller political groups who claim to represent aspirations of Jammu region should sit back and reflect upon their significant political achievements for Jammu region. But none needs to told again that we are back to square one. |
