APHC extends Mirwaiz's term for two more years
11/7/2006 10:41:21 PM

Srinagar , Nov 07,
While the moderate faction of the APHC today re-elected Moulvi Umar Farooq as the chairman of the conglomerate for two more years, APHC has decided to meet the Pakistan Foreign Secretary in New Delhi next week, pledging its support to the composite dialogue process.

The decision was announced by senior separatist leader, Professor Abdul Gani Bhat, while addressing media persons at the APHC headquarters after the General Council met to elect Omar for the second consecutive time.

"Mohammad Omar Farooq was chosen as the chairman from now onwards for two years," Bhat said while adding that the election was important as APHC was "trying to move forward in a specific direction while working on a political agenda."

Bhat said that APHC had decided to send a delegation to New Delhi to meet up with the Pakistan Foreign Secretary and the names of members of delegation shall be finalized in the next meeting of the General Council likely to take place in a few days.

"A delegation of the APHC is leaving for Delhi to meet and discuss the situation with reference to the dynamics of the changes happening across the globe, particularly in the sub-continent with the foreign secretary of Pakistan on the 14th of November," Bhat said.

Interestingly, hardliner separatist leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, is also likely to meet the Pakistan Foreign Secretary in New Delhi.

About Umar's agenda at the PUGWASH Conference, Bhat said that Umar is going to Cairo in the capacity of the Mirwaiz Kashmir as well as APHC Chairman and so he will deliberate on "Islam and West" in capacity of the Mirwaiz and as the "democratically elected APHC chairman" he shall "give vent to the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir."

During the General Council meeting, APHC also pledged its support to the ongoing dialogue process going on between India and Pakistan .
"Let there be no mistake about it, let there be no miscalculations about it that we pledge unflinching support to the dialogue process which involve directly India and Pakistan and indirectly APHC as well," the former chairman said. "And to cap it all, we pledge our support the President of Pakistan for his efforts directing towards finding an acceptable, durable and honourable solution to the Kashmir problem."

Bhat said that APHC will meet again to work out a political strategy in the direction of developing communication channels between different parties to the Kashmir issue.

"APHC shall meet again with the view to making a concrete contribution towards bringing up bridges of understanding and communication, not only between India and Pakistan but also between Kashmir and both India as well as Pakistan," Bhat stated.

About speculations that APHC, Sajjad Lone and Yasin Malik were moving closer to agreeing over a common agenda on forward movement on Kashmir issue, Bhat said that Sajjad was not a part of the APHC, though a truce between Lone brothers could have implications.

"Remember for all times to come, blood is thicker than water. People who flourish in discord may be dismayed that the two brothers have met but this was to happen. As for the implications, let us wait and see," Bhat said philosophically.

Bhat, however, avoided a question about truce with Geelani saying that "he is a different stuff and we constitute a different stuff." Geelani had on Tuesday said in a seminar that only point of agreement with the moderate faction of APHC could be fighting for the right to self determination, indicating that the dialogue process going on was short of the original agenda of the separatist movement.

Reacting sharply to the Geelani's comments, Bhat said, "Let us make it clear that we will talk under all circumstances because we believe that there is no alternative available with us, be it India, Pakistan or the people of Kashmir. Those who do not want to do the talking can not go with us and we can not go with him."

We do not expect miracles to happen in one meeting or two meetings as Kashmir, as it is a very complicated issue, we can't take leaps and break legs and heads too.
