| Kashmiri Pandits burn their effigy | | |
Jammu, Nov 7 Kashmiri Pandits burnt an effigy symbolising their community here today to express grave concern at the "extinction" of their identity and protest their neglect by the state government. Over 1,700 activists of the All Party Migrant Coordination Committee (APMCC), a grouping of 16 Kashmiri Pandit migrants' organisations, paraded through Jewel Chowk area shouting anti-government slogans. They burnt an effigy with the words "Identity of Kashmiri Pandits" inscribed on it and later immersed the ashes in Tawi river.
"We set afire the identity of Kashmiri Pandits here today as the community is fast heading towards extinction due to the stepmotherly treatment and anti-Kashmiri Pandit policy of the government," APMCC chairman Vinod Pandit told reporters after the protest.
"The community is hurt as the Congress had been giving stepmotherly treatment to Pandits, who gave this country three prime ministers - Jawahar Lal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi besides scores of ministers, policy-makers and planners," he said.
The community also demanded the creation of an autonomous council to supervise their affairs. |
