About 4.50 lakhs crosses ahead of previous record to Vaishno Devi
Unrest in Kashmir valley put hurdle in achieving another milestone
12/28/2010 10:44:23 PM
EARLY IMES REPORT
Katra, Dec 28: Pilgrimage to holy cave shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi ji is already moving ahead of its previous record by about 4,57,465 lakhs. As during the last year, the yatra to Vaishno Devi bhawan in Trikuta hills which was 82 lakhs,as the highest figure recorded till all the previous years.
With 4 days still left in the year and winter vacations already set in, expected number of heavy rush of yatra is awaited by the business community. Last year, an all time high 82 lakh devotees had visited Vaishno Devi shrine, prior to that 67.92 lakh yatra was recorded to the shrine in 2008 and 74.17 lakhs in 2007.
Even in this chilly weather conditions, about 35000 pilgrims were reaching Katra, the base camp of holy cave shrine to trek 13 kms for the darshan of Goddess Vaishno Devi. This year, the pilgrimage to holy cave shrine could have easily touched 9 million figure but the three months long unrest in Kashmir valley put a great impact on arrival of pilgrims thereby reducing their number significantly.
To meet ever-increasing rush of yatris, the shrine was gearing up to raise its infrastructure. It planned to set up material rope-way to lift supplies from Siar Dabri near Katra town to Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan and passenger ropeway from Bhawan to Bhairon Ghat.
A new track from Katra to Adh-kuwari exclusively for the ponywallas has also been approved by the Board of Directors of the SMVDSB in its meeting held at New Delhi under the chairmanship of Governor N N Vohra who happened to be the chairman of Shrine Board. The bandh call given by the transporters, however put hurdle for the devotees in reaching Katra thereby reducing its daily-expected numbers of yatris to be registered during the peak season.
As such, due to bandh, enquiry counter remained deserted through out the day.
In January this year, the number of pilgrims stood at 3.99 lakhs, while it was 3.77 lakh in February, 7.22 lakhs in March, 8.78 lakh in April, 9.14 lakhs in May, 9.19 lakhs in June, 8.4 lakhs in July, 7.91 lakhs in August, 6.28 lakhs in September, 8.14 lakh in October, 8.66 lakhs in November and it is surprising that up to 26th December -10 only 4.81 lakhs of yatris have been recorded so far, very less figures in this month and due to hartal by transporters on 27th ,only 14000 devotees had been registered by the registration counter by afternoon only
