Now, 'Facebook', electronic signals to streamline traffic scenario | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Dec 29: Apparently taking a cue from the other state's traffic police, the traffic wing of Jammu and Kashmir Police has now decided to take refuge of 'Facebook', a social networking site, to streamline the wayward traffic scenario in Jammu city by inviting suggestions and feedback from the people. ''As various remedial measures are being taken and many proposals are in the pipeline to streamline the traffic, the department will launch its account on 'Facebook' to invite suggestions and advises from the general public as it is one of the most popular and most visited social networking sites these days,'' Hemant Kumar Lohia, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Traffic told reporters at a press conference here today. Lohia said pictures related to violation, suggestions to improve traffic structure, advises to streamline the chaos and any queries related to traffic, can be uploaded on the 'Facebook' account of J&K Traffic Police, which would be launched in the first week of January 2011. The IGP further added that besides 'Facebook', a website providing all necessary information, electronic traffic signal system, interceptor vans and a toll free number, would also be introduced by the department to sort out the traffic problems. Advocating technology replacing man power, Lohia said, ''Technology can do much better than a human being and soon hi-tech system to be introduced in Jammu and Kashmir will operate and manage the entire traffic scenario.'' The IGP however, also suggested 'carpool' system to be adopted by the people, which can help in reducing the traffic mess. He further added that instructions have been issued that all vehicles including the police gypsies shall carry a proper registration number. ''All the vehicles including police gypsies have to get a proper registration number displayed by December 31 except few of them which will be exempted due to security reasons and they will carry only chassis number,'' the IGP added. Hemant Lohia announced that after getting clearance from the state government the police department is ready to install traffic signals. Lohia said, at present the state government is working out the economics of the much awaited project and the tenders will be called only on the basis of the final decision. The department has also decided to install Close circuit TV cameras at 52 troubled spots along the national highway .The traffic police department is also in the process of procuring traffic interceptor vans fitted with Laser speed gun to check speed limits of over speeding vehicles. The senior police officer further informed that the Traffic wing of Jammu and Kashmir Police is going to observe Road Safety Week from January 1 winter capital of the state. Lohia said every year the week is being observed but this time, besides awareness camps, painting competitions and rallies would also be organised. |
