Scams, scandals shook J&K in year 2010 | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 31: 2010 can be safely described as year of scams and scandals for Jammu and Kashmir also. Things bean turning topsy-turvy right from day 1 of the year 2010. In the last week of December 2009, Chief Manager of Central Cooperative Bank was accused of defrauding the bank with a loan amount of Rs 116.98 lakh. This was followed by MBBS entrance scandal involving son of a senior leader of ruling National Conference (NC) Ram Paul and the daughter of the then Congress minister G.M. Saroori. Government later ordered a CBI probe. This was followed by milk scam in which an Army officer Lt. Col Kuldeep Singh of military farms was dismissed from service and awarded three years rigorous imprisonment by General Court Martial (GCM). He was found involved in irregularities in procurement of milk powder. Lt Col Singh was found guilty in 15 charges by GCM over the purchase of skimmed milk powder. Purchases of 1526 metric tonnes of skimmed milk powder had been through local market in violation of all rules by the said army officer during Operation Parakram between January 2001 and August 2003. Another fiscal scam was unveiled and it was found that officials of J&K Bank Branch, Letipora during the year 2009 and 2010 had misappropriated compensation amount of over Rs. 20 crore meant for disbursement among eligible beneficiaries of the four lanning of National Highway in village Letipora and other adjacent villages. J&K state vigilance Department booked the case. Revenue officers of District Pulwama including Adil Rashid Naqash, Parvez Ahmed Andrabi and officers of J&K Bank Branch Lethpora, Pulwama including Nazir Ahmed Mir, Showkat Ahmed Dar of Zinipora, Chadoora, Farooq Jehan Zaib alias Rinku of Awantipora, Pulwama and others were found accused of misappropriated compensation amount resulting into corresponding loss to the state exchequer. In October this year, 10 persons including two deputy directors were arrested by CBI in connection with two ration scams in Kishtwar and Rajouri districts of the state. Arrested officials included Deputy Director CAPD, South Kashmir, Khurshid Ahmed Sanaye, deputy director CAPD of North Kashmir Riyaz Ahmad Wani, in charge supervisors Vailoo Godown Manzoor Ahmed Ganie and Ghulam Rasool Sheikh. Special team was appointed to investigate case in 2009. In this case, CAPD officials were found to misappropriate food grains of Vailoo and Inshan Godowns to the tune of Rs 31, 52,660.
