SOP to check violence using non-lethal arms | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Dec 31: A standard operating procedure (SOP) would be drafted to deal with mob violence with emphasis on use of non-lethal weapons. "The union home ministry has constituted a group of top level police and security officers for drafting the SOP to deal with mob violence with emphasis on use of non-lethal weapons," group chairman and DGP Kuldeep Khoda today said in his year-end message. DGP of Andhra Pradesh, ADG of Uttar Pradesh, IG Rapid Action Force and representatives of CRPF and Intelligence Bureau are among other members in the group. The group was formed in aftermath of the five-month summer unrest in Kashmir where security forces used live ammunition at the start of the agitation, resulting in several dozen deaths. Although non-lethal weapons like Pump Action Guns were provided to CRPF and police for crowd control, improper use of the equipment also led to few deaths in the valley. The group had already submitted its draft to the union home ministry and awaited orders for implementation, Khoda said.He said a procedure had been drafted to tackle "extreme law and order situations" with least amount of force. With a view to tackle the extreme law and order situations effectively with least amount of force, a procedure has been drafted and submitted to union home ministry for implementation," Khoda said. |
