Cong in great dilemma over discrimination issue
12/31/2010 10:40:16 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Dec 31: The issue of discrimination facing Jammu and Ladakh regions which has been vigorously raised by BJP, has put the Congress into a great dilemma. To counter BJP and its national leadership which with one voice raised the discrimination issue with two regions of the state during its recent rally at Jammu, Congress was left with no option but to the admit that Jammu region has been subjected to discrimination over the years.
Feeling totally offended with BJP'S offensive the Congress leadership thought it appropriate to join the voice of people of the two regions where the Party has a mass base and make a forceful demand for ending the discrimination with the two regions of the state with creation of such a mechanism that can ensure equal distribution of funds among the three regions.
This is the main reason that during its December 28 rally at Dusherra Ground Gandhi Nagar organised by Minister of Relief, Revenue and Rehabilitation Raman Bhalla, the Congress Working Committee Member and MP Satyabrat Chaturvedi has stressed on creation of such an effective mechanism that can pave way for equal distribution of resources among all the three regions of the state and ending present discrimination to which the Jammu and Ladakh regions are subjected to.
But surprisingly the remarks of Congress leaders have drawn a flake from the BJP, National Panthers Party, Dogra Liberation Front, VHP and other organisations of the region. Terming the statement of Mr Chaturbedi an eye wash a BJP spokesman said this way Congress was again trying to befool the people of the region.
He said the Congress must know that it is main culprit behind the injustice to which people of the two regions were subjected to since 1947 after the democratic Governments came to power in the state. While from 1947 to 1953 Congress fully backed the Sheikh Abdullah and his National Conference and its policies after 1953 Congress was behind the installation of the Governments of Bakshi Ghulam Mohammed, Shamas-ud-Din and Ghulam Mohammed Sadiq till Late G M Sadiq converted his organisation Democratic National Conference into Congress and became the first Chief Minister of a Congress Government in the state.
The spokesman said later the Congress continued to rule in the state upto 1975 after an accord was signed with Sheikh Mohammed Abdullh and he was appointed as Chief Minister with the support of the Party. However the Party remained out of power from 1977 to 1984 after it revolted against Sheikh and withdrew support to his Government in 1977 when the Party was defeated in general elections and Janata Party came to power at Delhi.
Later in the Assemble elections in the same year the NC led by Sheikh got an absolute majority in the Assembly and it ruled the state upto 1982 till the death of Sheikh.
Later in the Assemble elections of 1983 NC was again voted to power in the state but the Government headed by Dr Farooq Abdullah could not last more than a year after the Congress engineered defection in the Party and 12 MLAs revolted against Dr Abdullah by installing a puppet Government led by late G M Shah brother-in-law of Dr Abdullah, the BJP spokesman said.
This Government was sacked in 1986 and Governor's rule installed in the state after communal violence broke out in some parts of South Kashmir, the spokesman said, adding the Party again joined hands with Farooq's NC in 1987 and shared a coalition Government with the party till 1989 when Dr Abdullah resigned in protest against the appointment of Mr Jagmohan as the Governor of the state.
The spokesman said the Party again joined coalition with PDP in 2002 and was in power upto 2008. The Party headed the coalition also from 2005 to 2008, he added. Disputing the statements of the Party on discrimination the spokesman said one fails to understand whom Congress wants to blame for the discrimination. Is Party befooling the people or itself by raking up such an issue. Same are the allegations levelled by NPP, SS, VHP and DLF leaders who said with growing resentment against the discrimination in Jammu and Ladakh regions, Congress is trying to divert the peoples attention by making manipulating statements.
