Congress also "communal", say pro-Valley elements

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Dec 31: BJP is, according to the Valley-centric leadership and a section of print media, communal, chauvinist and reactionary. Why because it raises the bogey of discrimination against Jammu. The BJP is also communal and anti-Kashmir because it demands the state's complete merger with the political and constitutional organization of India so that J&K is brought at par with other states of the Union.
One can understand the reasons behind the anger of the "Valley-centric" leadership and a section of print media against the BJP and the reasons are well known. But one fails to understand why certain elements in Kashmir and the print media should equate the Congress with the BJP and also dismiss the former as communal.
The past two days have seen certain elements upping their ante against the Congress. A number of anti-Congress statements have emanated from the Kashmir Valley. A number of anti-Congress write-ups have also appeared in a number of Kashmir-based dailies and elsewhere. At least three English language dailies have editorially condemned the Congress party. The most striking aspect of the whole situation is that even the bitter critics of the NC have criticized the Congress and described its approach towards J&K as patently communal, reactionary and fundamentally bad.
What has provoked a relentless campaign against the Congress? Three things: December 28 demand of former Deputy Chief Minister Mangat Ram Sharma seeking rotational Chief Minister-ship; December demand that the office of Chief Minister should be held by Jammu for three years after January 5, 2011 and December 28 demand that Jammu province be meted out a fair treatment or Jammu province should be given its legitimate due in the state's polity and economy. In other words, what a few Congress leaders said in Jammu in a party rally has evoked a very negative response from some important elements in Kashmir and an influential section of the print media.
Local Congress leaders, when contacted for their comments on the adverse reaction to some of the speeches made during the rally, expressed shock and asserted on condition of anonymity that "to demand justice for Jammu and suggest rotational chief minister-ship is no communalism" and that "they would intensify their activities in order to force the state government to give a fair treatment to Jammu province and persuade their leadership in Delhi to go in for rotational chief minister-ship." But more than that, they were highly appreciative of Mangat Ram Sharma and Health Minister Sham Lal Sharma for what they described as "their bold stand." They told what "both the Sharmas have said is what a vast majority of Congressmen in Jammu believes in." "Enough is enough" was the upshot of the Congressmen whom this scribe contacted to know their reactions.
