New Yr celebrations held across capital city amid tight security

JAMMU, Dec 31: On last day of 2010, celebrations were held across the winter capital city here with people welcoming the New Year 2011 with fanfare amid tight security.
As the hotels, clubs and restaurants were tastefully decorated and illuminated to mark the colorful celebration, heavy deployment of police and security forces was made in this city and its peripheries following intelligence inputs of a possible terror strike.
Apart from hotels and clubs, shopping malls, government buildings and rotaries had also been decorated with colourful lights. Thousands of people today also thronged Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Cave Shrine to pay obeisance besides the hill station Patnitop to enjoy the season's first snowfall on New year.
Police have intensified night patrolling at various locations of the city. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jammu Zone, Dilbagh Singh in a meeting last evening, in view of the New Year celebrations, had also reviewed the security scenario. To see that the celebrations pass off peacefully and to have proper security arrangements, the field officers briefed by Dilbagh to be more vigilant. "The territorial officers should ensure effective presence and deployment of police at all places in and around Jammu city and the men on duty have to be courteous, absorb good conduct and they should be tough with the trouble creaters," the IGP added. However, special alert was being maintained alongwith the border belt in liaison with other forces deployed to ensure that any effort to sneak into this side by Pak-based militants was foiled.
Meanwhile various clubs and hotels organized impressive functions by inviting celebrities from bollywood and entertained people in the City of Temples to welcome year 2011. Hotels had been decorated like newly wedded brides on the eve of New Year.
According to reports, many clubs and hotels of Jammu city organized grand parties, shows and other such programmes, to enthrall locals in the evening on the last day of the year "2010". Famous singers, video DJs and dancers were invited to entertain their fans in the city. In Jammu Club, famous celebrities of bollywood including Jai Walia, Kanchan and Kiran Chaturvedi enthralled audiences with their songs.
Similarly, in Amar Singh Club renowned singers from film industry Mohini Singh, Khayali besides Sugandha amused the people of the city with their enthralling songs. Likewise, Hotel Ritz Manor arranged the DJ party with the entry of couple and girls only.
Jehlum Resorts, Hotel Asia and Hotel Ashoka besides many other many other well-known hotels organized DJ programmes for couples. Similar reports were also received from several hotels and clubs where New Year was celebrated with colorful items.
According to legends, new year was first observed in ancient Babylon about 4000 years ago. In the years around 2000 BC, the Babylonian New Year began with the first New Moon after the Vernal Equinox. The Babylonian New Year celebration lasted for eleven days. Each day had its own particular mode of celebration, but it is safe to say that modern New Year's Eve festivities pale in comparison.
