IGP K Rajinder declares open Christmas Gold Cup Football | Kathua boys stun Young Star in opener | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 01: Outplaying one of the top clubs of Jammu 4-2 in the inaugural match, the energetic and well-knitted side of Kathua Football Club (KFC) today sailed into the second round of quarterfinals in the 5th Christmas Gold Cup Football Tournament got underway at GGM Science College ground, here. Entered into the field with lot of confidence, clad in white, Young Star launched their campaign from road end making it difficult for KFC to take control of the ball. Local boys, who enjoyed the crowd support, succeeded in their game plan when struck the first blood in seventh minute through Rakesh Kumar. However, over confidence cost the Young Star dearly. Playing under the patronage of State Sports Council coach, Sat Pal, Young Star conceded goal in the 15th minute when guard at the net failed to clear the approaching ball. It was VP who brought in the equalizer for KFC to make it 1-1. Soon after the sides changed, Young Star again went ahead with Rakesh scoring second goal for the team in the 40th minute. The lead could not last long and Naveen equalized the score on board 2-2 netting the ball in the 45th minute. Kathua boys, who kept their stamina intact, dominated the last 20-minute game. They not only succeeded in converting a penalty kick awarded in their favour in the 60th minute but also exposed the opponent defence scoring fourth goal thereby making it a big 4-2 win. While Rajinder converted the penalty kick awarded to in the 60th minute, VP scored his second and team’s fourth goal in the 68th minute of the 70-minute game. Unfortunately, one of the top clubs of the state, Young Star has lost its sheen in the recent times and today suffered in the hands of a district club. Young Star is owned by former resident secretary of JKFA Jammu wing, Shiv Pal. Earlier, the mega event was declared open by Inspector General of Police (Armed), K Rajindra in a well-attended function. He kick-started the knock-out tournament and wished the participants success. Minister for Sports, R S Chib also visited the venue and encouraged the teams and the organizers, All J&K Christian Welfare Association. The Minister witnessed full second half of the play. Chairman of the organizing committee, SM Gill presented a brief note of the tournament and expressed his thanks to the special invitees for their support and encouragement. Also present, Bishop Peter Celestine, Bishop of Decose of J&K State and Rev Sohan Lal, incharge of St’ Pauls Church Jammu prayed for success of the event. Prominent among others present were Director Information, Farooq Ahmed Rengzu, R K Kohli and Surider Singh Bunty, representatives from Jammu and Kashmir Football Association.
