Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Jan 1: College lecturer Noor Mohammed Bhat who was arrested on the charges of setting a seditious graduate-level English paper has pleaded innocence immediately after his release from the jail.
He has stated that he had set the paper keeping in view syllabus covered during the year. A lecturer of Gandhi Memorial College Noor Mohammad Bhat was released on bail after 20 days. He said that the graduate-level English paper he was arrested for was “student-friendly” and that he had no malafide motives.
“I suffered because I had set student friendly paper since students had only been taught ten percent of the syllabus. Let me make it clear that neither I nor my family have any political connections,” Bhat said. He further said that paper issue was academic and should have been dealt by Kashmir University.
“Police should have first asked the University to probe the issue. I had asked questions on current affairs and it was strange that I was booked for a criminal case,” he said. 47-year-old lecturer said that the paper was a balanced one. “Part first of the paper was set by one lecturer and other part by me. Then somebody else clubbed the two,” he said, adding, “it was a balanced paper and newspaper only highlighted portion of it.”
Bhat was released late last evening after the Jammu and Kashmir High Court granted bail to him against bond of Rs 25000. Bhat through his counsel had moved CMP for bail while challenging portion of bail rejection ruling by Principal District and Sessions Judge in state high court on Wednesday last.
On December 10 last, Police arrested the lecturer under 13 unlawful activities act. The question papers set by Bhat for English subjects of B.A and B.Sc first year exams had asked students: “Are the stone pelters real heroes. Discuss? Besides translate an Urdu passage related to this year’s summer unrest to English.
