Calling non-Kashmiris Kashmiris an insult to non-Kashmiris
MINCING NO WORDS -- I

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Jan 1: Attempts are being made at national and international level to create an impression that the entire population in J&K belongs to the one and the same ethnic stock or that all the people in the state are ethnically Kashmiris. The objective of those who have unleashed this campaign is to mislead the international community and make it believe that the people of the state are one as far as their needs, compulsions and aspirations are concerned and that all of them want political emancipation from the “Indian occupied forces.” One of the persons of Kashmir origin who have been presenting the demographic profile in the state is Gulam Nabi Fai.
Only recently, Fai delivered a lecture on Kashmir in New York University and emphasized the need of resolving the “Kashmir conflict under United Nations resolution.” He expressed the view that “India should recognize that there could not be a military solution of the problem and any such solution is bound to invite challenge.” “This should exclude consideration of the Line of Control as a prospective boundary between the two countries. For Kashmiris, LOC is only the glorified name given to a cease-fire line between two armed forces fixed purely on a military basis on a certain date. Its legitimacy has nothing to do with the life of the people on either side except to disrupt it,” Fai said. He also said: “The United Nations is well equipped to orchestrate free and fair elections to end conflicts. Nambia, Mozambique, Cambodia and East Timor are splendid examples. The United Nations was prepared to conduct a free and fair plebiscite in Kashmir more than 60 years ago, but was stymied by India’s intransigence.”
Not just this, Fai also asserted that “a Kashmiri nation would be a model of democracy and religious pluralism. Kashmiris of all faiths – Muslims, Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh or otherwise – have historically enjoyed amicable and warm relations. During its centuries of autonomy or virtual independence, communal violence or abrasiveness was unknown between the members of different religious communities. Kashmiris shared values and a heritage that far transcended religious divides.”
What he said was nothing but a blend of distortions and misrepresentations. He blamed India for the inability of the United Nations to hold a plebiscite in the state to ascertain the views of the people if they would like to be part of India, part of Pakistan, or if they would like to become independent of both India and Pakistan. He did not even once referred to those conditions which Pakistan had to fulfill before ground was prepared for holding the so-called plebiscite in the state.
For example, he did not say that Pakistan had to vacate the aggression and quit the occupied areas (Pakistan-occupied-Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan) and the Indian forces had to reoccupy those areas in order to maintain law and order there. Fai also conveniently overlooked the fact that the United Nations resolutions, like the Indian Independence Act of 1947, did not envisage independence for the state. He also did not inform his ignorant audience that the State of Jammu and Kashmir was not part of the partition plan and that it was only the British India that had to be bifurcated to create Muslim Pakistan. He also suppressed the fact that it was none other than Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah who had persuaded Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to enforce a cease-fire when the Pakistani troops, regular and irregular, were on the run and the Indian Forces were about to recapture the occupied areas. (To be concluded)
