YEAR ENDER CRICKET
Lack of transparency, dismal performance mar state cricket
1/2/2011 9:12:00 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Jan 2:Not withstanding the tall promises made by the office bearers of Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) after their election in April 2009, the performance graph of the state cricket teams declined drastically during the year 2010. Apart from this, the year witnessed bungling almost at all levels in otherwise elitist association of the state. In other words, the dismal performance and bungling marred state cricket during the entire season.
Performance of different teams:
All the teams sponsored by JKCA failed to perform during this year, courtesy—jaundiced cricketing system. Among about 50 matches played by the state teams at the national scene in various age groups, J&K has won just a single match in under-22 years’ boys category at home, which simply depicts the picture of the whole cricketing scenario in the state. J&K started the season with humiliating defeats against Punjab, Services, Himachal, Haryana and Delhi in the North Zone T20 Mushtaq Ali cricket tournament and followed it with an extremely dismal show in all the five matches in Ranji trophy Plate-B 4-dayers which included low profile teams of Andhra, Vidharbha, Maharashtra, Kerala and Goa. Moreover, what dismayed one was that the history creator under-22 team a season before, just won one match this time which clearly indicates failure of the association in grooming the otherwise talented bench strength.
Same is the case with the under-19 years boys and girls teams in one-dayers as also the 4-day matches as they were badly defeated by their rivals. Now, to talk of the performance of under-14 and under-16 teams is to red rag a bull. So, winning one match out of fifty did not set Thames on fire rather it puts a question mark over the wisdom of the entire working quorum of JKCA whether administrators, selectors, coaches or managers.
Selection of teams:
The teams for all age groups during the year 2010 were selected by the selectors who were unconstitutionally nominated by the office bearers and not by the working committee. So, expecting fair selection from unfair selectors was simply meaningless rather to cry for the moon. The teams were picked without holding the matches and the probable were chosen sans open trials to give rise to favouritism and even nepotism.
The selectors along with joint secretary from Jammu wing had resigned over some reservations and their resignation was accepted by the office bearers without considering the working committee to throw JKCA constitution to winds. The state of affairs is that the association is running in absence of `Jammu wing’. No one bothers as the number of share holders has lessened.
Nomination of sub-committees:
The JKCA office bearers adopted dictatorial way of dealing things by nominating sub-committees of their own choice and the committees framed comprised of members more than five which is against the norms of the constitution as the constitution allows only three to five members in each sub-committee.
JKCA office shifted from city-centre to outskirts:
The year 2010 witnessed shifting of JKCA office from Rehari in heart of the city to Bathandi to leave the cricketers in the lurch as the old office was accessible to all. Moreover, the shifting of the office doubled the rent to put burden on the JKCA expenditure.
Due elections delayed:
As per the constitution, the JKCA elections were due in April 2010 but they are delayed for the reasons better known to the office bearers despite JKCA president Dr Farooq Abdullah’s announcement of holding them in the month of December 2010.
Now, the time is ripe to hold elections and make an end to dictatorship and help the state cricketers to flourish. The election may also help the state to pick a better team for Ranji trophy One-Dayers which are scheduled to be held in the month of February 2011 to begin the New Year with a positive note. Healthy association is directly proportional to healthy performance.
