Tree talk organized amid foggy weather

Jammu, Jan 2: Braving chill and foggy weather and continuing with a missionary zeal to popularize and propagate love for tree culture , Tree talk -3 got a magnificent start in the Mahamaya Environmental Park in outskirts of Jammu.
In the wee hours of chilly Sunday, about 60 participants having love for nature participated in the specially organised walk session with a focus on popular tree talk . Prominent personalities drawn from varied backgrounds and having diverse experiences shared their wisdom and concerns regarding local tree diversity and immediate need to disseminate traditional folk knowledge to the younger generation who are glued to internet and lead indoor city life and seldom get any chance to interact with trees of their neighbourhood .
Proposed tree talks have the focus on three broad domains – first focus is on tree nomenclature , both local as well as scientific , 2nd area of discussion is tree utility , both traditional as well as modern and thirdly discussion also revolves around tree conservation , both in situ as well as ex situ . Experts on Taxonomy , local languages , Ayurveda , folk healing , Pharmacology , Forestry , Floriculture , Wildlife , Soil and Water conservation , Agriculture , WWF , Environment , Horticulture take part in the organized discussions centred around tree flora of the area surrounding Jammu city.
Participants at Mahamaya Environment Park were provided deeper insight into the world of tree mythology , tree chemistry , tree phenology , tree tinctology and tree biology . It was interesting to know that trees express different moods and colours in different seasons, trees like Sheesham (Tahli in Dogri ) , Semal ( Simbal in Dogri ) shed their leaves to cut off water loss and tide over freezing temperature of winter but the same trees get clothed in lush green robe at the return of spring season .
Prominent personalities who addressed participants included Ex PCCF R.D.Swatantra , Adl. PCCF and Director Soil and Water Conservation Abhai Kumar , Regional Director Deptt of Environment and Remote Sensing Sh Vinod Raina , Sant Kumar Sharma Senior Editor News Point , Prof Yash Pal Deptt of Botany , Navin Shah IFS , Arshad Moghal DFO Rajouri , Sehrish Gazal Deptt of Environmental Sciences, Sardar Manjeet Singh and O.P. Bakshi prominent social workers of Jammu , Rajesh Padha ,Praveen Badgotra , Principals namely Rafi Ahmad Bhat , Inderjeet Singh , Hitender Singh , Suhail Yousuf and others.
The continuing series of tree talks to be organized on each Sunday , next tree talk is proposed to be held on January 9 at Forest Guard School, Doomi short of Akhnoor followed by next Tree Talk at Forest Soil Conservation School, Miransahib on January 16 as per chalked out programme .
