Things may turn dangerous in Jammu

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Jan 2: As if the negative attitude of the state government was not enough to create widespread resentment in Jammu, New Delhi has adopted a step-motherly approach towards the people of this province. All this, despite the fact that the state government wants New Delhi to respect the Jammu sentiment so that peace is not disturbed in this otherwise peaceful province.
One can catalogue here instances and instances to show that the state government has all through willfully ignored the genuine claims of the people of Jammu province. But there is one instance that shows that the attitude of the state government towards the Jammu province has been quite positive. May be because the law and order authorities in Jammu province and their masters in the Civil Secretariat believe that going against the Jammu sentiment would create law and order problem in the province.
The Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, had expressed some such view in his communication to the Chief Secretary to the state government some months ago. The Chief Secretary had endorsed the view of the Divisional Commissioner and communicated to the Union Government the state government's view that it would not be in the best interest of the state to ignore the demand of the people of Jammu, especially the teaching and student community and enlightened sections of the civil society, regarding the appointment of a local academician as Vice-chancellor of the Jammu Central University. What the Chief Secretary wrote was not his personal viewpoint. It was viewpoint of the government (read the stand of the Chief Minister).
The President of India also reportedly considered the viewpoint of the state government and other reports and communicated to the concerned ministry her view that she should not be held responsible if her action on the insistence of certain elements in the Central Government leads to law and order problem in Jammu. In other words, the Union President, too, had taken into consideration the viewpoint of the state government. Indeed, a very positive approach to a sensitive issue.
It would not be out of place to mention here that the Central Government had decided to set up two Central Universities in the state after the state government convinced the authorities in New Delhi that both Jammu province and Kashmir region needed one Central University each. The state government had taken this view on the ground that such a step would harmonize inter-regional relations. The official stand had been hailed by one and all in Jammu & Kashmir. And, why not? After all, the people of Jammu province had witnessed the Chief Minister and government doing something very, very positive.
There are reports in a section of the print media which suggest that certain elements have overlooked the viewpoint of the state government and decided to outrage the Jammu sentiment just for one man. This has only angered the people of Jammu province. This doesn't augur well. There are reasons to believe that things in Jammu province would turn dangerous if New Delhi bypasses the state government. Jammu can create a volcanic situation. It has such a capacity. It would be an act of foolishness to forget the Jammu of 1998 and 2008. New Delhi should not take the people of Jammu province for a ride. And, why should it insist on something the people do not appreciate.
