Minister’s T20 final delay plays spoilsport | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, January 3: The unnecessary delay in holding the final of the much talked about Twenty20 Friendship Cup Cricket Tournament at Bana Singh Stadium in R S Pura, an initiative of Minister for Sports, plays spoilsport as the event has left cricketers of the area in the lurch and also dismayed the entire cricketing fraternity. Organised jointly by the Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) and J&K State Sports Council involving over 50 rural teams in September last, the event has turned out to be an expensive affair. “We had felt ecstatic when the tournament was started at Bana Singh Stadium in the month of September, especially when we came to know about the huge number of participating teams. Such tournaments serve as a launching pad for budding cricketers of rural areas to hone their inherent talent and skill,” said manager of a participating team. He added that the unnecessary delay in holding the final, particularly with two main sports agencies conducting the event, dismays all and sundry. “For that matter, blaming smaller organisations for not holding healthy competitions is simply meaningless, he maintained. Moreover, a number of cricketers who took part in the tournament alleged that they have yet to receive colour uniforms made for the event. It is pertinent to mention here that as per custom in the state it is witnessed in most of the tournaments that the title-clashes are usually delayed to give a bad taste. Such practices need to be stopped at an earliest to promote sports in the state.
