| Road safety week turns farce in Udhampur | | City road turned into illegal parking lot | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Udhampur Jan 4: Road Safety Week seems to have no meaning here in Udhampur . The authorities, inspite of repeated reminders, have failed to regulate traffic in city markets and Dhar road.
The annual road safety week has become a ritual with the same events being held year after year. Officials of ARTO and traffic police finished their responsibility by pasting pamphlets on main traffic chowks in city, particularly at MH and Subash chowk near Domail with almost the same list of guests.
Though the ARTO and traffic police is observing the ongoing national road safety week and is trying to spread the message of safe driving, it has failed to reach the target audience and the local residents feel that in the absence of any evaluation criteria to consider the impact of the awareness programmes on road users, the idea of the road safety week has been rendered insignificant.
Residents showing concern over traffic management in city roads such as at Slathia chowk , Gole market and other places said that road safety week has no meaning for them as there is no one to check traffic violation on roads .
Vikram Slathia, president, Lok Vikas Dal said that the city roads have been turned into illegal parking lot. People can be seen parking their vehicles in the middle of roads at Slathia chowk , Gole Market creating traffic jams under the noose of traffic police.
Local residents said that the traffic police should devise strategies after analyzing the traffic scene of the city and should fix goals to improve traffic system in Udhampur . The police has ignored traffic rule violations, including wrong lane driving, right of way and giving way to pedestrians. The police should educate motorists throughout the year, except celebrating week in a year
