Govt Library, Shastri Nagar - unfamiliar, unknown for locals | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 4: The government libraries in the city are in an awful condition as the authorities have adopted apathetic attitude towards them. Government libraries provide people a cheap and easiest way to update their knowledge but due to the official apathy it they have now become just a piece of show piece. The same scene can be experienced while observing Government Library located in Shastri Nagar. The library which was shifted from Roop Nagar many years ago is going on in a rented accommodation. Books and the other study materials kept in the library have not been revised since years. In a month, about eight newspapers and some magazines are being subscribed for the readers visiting library but surprisingly people residing in the vicinity do not know the existence of a public library in the area. Retashi Abrol- a college student residing in Shastri Nagar area said that she is living in the area since her childhood but still she is unaware of the location of the library. Retashi said that if she doesn’t know how others could be familiar with the library? Interestingly, there are five staff members deputed in the library which is hardly being visited by anyone. She added that only a librarian could be seen there in the library reading newspapers and no one visits there throughout the year. Sources said that Director of the Government libraries visited the library some months ago but still there is no considerable change in the fortunes of the library.
