Sham for channelizing Chenab for boosting agriculture | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Jan 04- Minister for Health, Horticulture & Floriculture, Sham Lal Sharma has directed the officers of Flood Control Department to take effective measures for protecting right bank of river Chenab at Akhnoor from soil erosion due to floods. The Minister was on an extensive tour of all the flood prone areas of Akhnoor to review pace of ongoing flood protection works along the right bank of River Chenab. He asked the officers to speed up the pace of work and accomplish them before the onset of rainy season, adding that winter season in Jammu division is so conducive for carrying out the flood protection works as the water in River Chenab flows at the lowest level. He asked them to conduct a fresh survey to identify the vulnerable flood prone spots, which frequently pose threat to the agricultural land. The villages visited by the Minister included, Lehrian, Sangrampur, Changwan, Dalpat, Bhour, Muthi Maira, Siterwala, Chack Sikander . While briefing the Minister about the status of works, Chief Engineer Irrigation and Flood Control, B.R.Dogra said that Department has already identified the vulnerable spots right from Akhnoor to Hamirpur Kona and work for plugging those is in full swing. He apprised that a comprehensive proposal for channelizing the river Chenab at different locations has been approved to the tune of Rs. 19 crore, which will be spent in phased manner. He assured the Minister that all vulnerable spots will be plugged /repaired before the summer. Consultant PHE, Irrigation & Flood Control, V.K.Abrol, SDM, Akhnoor, Ashok Sharma and other senior officers of Flood Control also accompanied the Minister.
