Army acts as saviour in extreme cold | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Jan 4: The incessant snowfall resulted in vehicles and passengers getting stranded at Jawahar Tunnel on night 29-30 Dec due to inclement weather and dipping temperatures, the passengers including women and children faced acute difficulties. Rising to the challenge, troops of 36 Rashtriya Rifles swung into action in rescuing the stranded passengers and evacuating them to safety. The harsh weather conditions started taking its toll on the passengers, when the Army medical team’s timely arrival provided the requisite medical assistance, including treatment for Hypothermia. In addition, the Army provided valuable assistance in removing the stranded vehicles, in an attempt to clear the highway. On 03 Jan 2011, the Army once again responded when a raging fire broke out in andipur by sending over 200 troops of 3 Madras and 14 Rashtriya Rifles with six water bowzers, recovery vehicles and firefighting equipment. In conjunction with the Fire Brigade, the Civil Administration and the brave people of Bandipur, the troops fought shoulder to shoulder in minimizing the loss of property and importantly saving precious lives. Besides, immediate temporary relief camp was also established with provisions of rations and sleeping bags for the displaced people. The populace recognises the untiring effort of the troops in times of disaster, in alleviating their problems.
