Kashmir Scene -- I | Separatists accept defeat, ask intellectuals to guide them | | RUSTAM EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 4: "No police was involved (in the killings). It was our own people who killed them. Time had come to speak the truth about the killers of Mirwaiz Muhammad Farooq (killed on May 21, 1990) and Abdul Gani Lone, who were shot dead on May 21, 2002, and Mohammad Sultan Bhat (brother of Hurriyat leader Abdul Gani Bhat), who was murdered in 1995. What is the need to identify them.... they are already identified. I had said this then and I am saying it now. There is no ambiguity or confusion in my mind. Lone Sahib, Mirwaiz Farooq and Prof Wani were not killed by Army or police. They were targeted by our own people. Story is long one but we have to tell the truth. Kashmiri politicians had started the separatist movement with killing our own intellectuals. Was Prof Wani martyr of brilliance or martyr of rivalry, we must ask ourselves today? On one hand, he (Syed Ali Shah Geelani) refuses to talk to India and, on the other, he takes pleasure in meeting with the Indian parliamentarians. These dichotomies and contradictions have to go. When we initiated talks with New Delhi, we were lebelled as Kafir (non-believers) and when you talk, it's no problem. The Kashmir issue cannot be solved without the involvement of intelligence in it. We killed intelligence now we are seeking Azadi. Which Azadi are we looking for? Azadi would not come without intellectualism. How many hartals will we observe? Was there a thought process behind the recent uprising? They say it was spontaneous but how can a freedom struggle be spontaneous? Why do we not tell society the truth about the losses we suffered. War between nuclear powers India and Pakistan is not possible so the option of solving the Kashmir issue by war is ruled out. Our armed struggle will never get recognition and support at the international level so that option goes too. So we are only left with dialogue as an option and it is important for world powers, including China and America, to solve the Kashmir issue." (Former Hurriyat chairman Abdul Gani Bhat) "We could not capitalize on Amarnath land row agitation in 2008, uprising against Shopian twin rape and murder in 2009 and last year's five months of agitation. The problem is that the intellectual class is only discussing and debating the mistakes of the past which everyone knows but no one suggests the way forward. Let intellectuals come up with suggestions about what the leadership shall do. Let them be critical of our actions. For past 63 years including the uprisings since 2008, this movement has seen many ups and downs. But why are we not able to carry forward the advantages we had in past three years? Why could not we give right direction to the uprisings? We can only know it when we sit with calmness and introspect. Politicians and intellectuals need to work together to find the reasons…We know our nation is often accused of unpredictability but we cannot overlook the sacrifices paid by every Kashmiri. However, it cannot be denied that we look for short-term benefits. We may not have the strategy but we do have the sacrifices, yet we are not able to give right direction to our movement. So I request everyone to understand the responsibility one has. Then only our movement will be compartmentalized like the successful movements of the past. See how India is changing the discourse, projecting our movement as a struggle of a few. Do not we need to counter it? Our intellectual class needs to fight it. Let us all sit together and come up with suggestions which can be discussed and debated. We need a collective effort. The social and moral fabric of the society needs to be guarded. "What good will the Azadi be if we would have lost the social and moral fabric at the time of achieving it. While demanding for Azadi we need to guard the values in our society." (Mirwaiz Umar Farooq) (To be continued) |
