Over 12 workers hurt in cane charge, leaders deplore use of force | PDP protest rally 'infuriates' Police in Jammu | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 4: Coming out of hibernation and its 'statement syndrome', the PDP- state's largest opposition party made a forceful presence on the main roads of the Winter capital, protesting against the failures of the NC led coalition regime on various fronts. The Police resisting the protests and forward movement of the party leaders resorted to lathi charge in which over a dozen PDP leaders were arrested. Following the state level multi pronged protest programme of the Party, the Jammu based leadership took out a protest rally from its headquarters while raising anti government and anti NC slogans. The situation took a violent turn when the PDP leaders and workers marching ahead were stopped near Tawi bridge by the Police. The rally was scheduled to march towards the Civil Secretariat where the party intended to echo concern loudly over price rise, frequent power curtailments and lack of basic amenities in many areas. Amid anti government slogans when the protesters reached Vikram Chowk, they held demonstration in a vehement manner .Some of them tried to disrupt the movement of traffic for some time to register their anger against the coalition government. Police tried in vain to evict them from the spot as the leaders resisted the move. This infuriated the cops resulting in minor scuffle between the two sides. In the action Police used lathis to disperse the protestors in which around a dozen of them received injuries. Party leaders said the use of force against the peaceful march was 'deplorable' as it reflected the 'mindset of the state government to curb genuine and peaceful protests'. Senior PDP vice president T.S. Bajwa said the 'government instead of giving basic amenities like water and electricity to the people was trying to punish' them using canes. 'This is most unfortunate,' he told reporters, adding that the party would continue its protest. Terming two year tenure of the present National Conference led regime as worst period in the history of Jammu and Kashmir, Peoples Democratic Party regretted that the State has plunged into unprecedented crises as this government has failed to solve basic problems of the masses. The leaders also alleged that it was first time in the history of the State that people have been facing severe scarcity of essential commodities like ration. Addressing the workers, PDP general secretary Thakur Balbir Singh said that achievements of this government were confined only on papers and on ground nothing concrete has been done. "The government seems to be more concerned about issuing press statements and conducting photo sessions to hoodwink the common masses", he said, adding, "failure of the State Government can be gauged from the fact that farmers, employees, technocrats, unemployed educated youth, students have been agitating in one way or other but the ruling party seems to be unconcerned towards growing unrest among different sections of the society", he lamented. "This dispensation is repeating the same blunders which were committed by the previous National Conference from 1996 to October 2002" he pointed out. Among other senior leaders who addressed the workers included Asgar Ali, MLC, Ved Mahajan, Daman Bhasin, Shanti Devi, Falail Singh, Hussain Ali Wafa, RK Bali, Suram Singh and Abdul Rashid Malik. |
