Dr Bhan to guide centre on internal security | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Jan 5 (KIP):-As a member of the National Security Advisory Board, which Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh reconstituted recently, Dr Ashok Bhan, a former Director General Police, will be helping the Government of India on matters connected with the internal security.
Bhan said that he would be the only member responsible for preparing policy papers on internal security while matters connected with defence, external affairs, defence productions etc were being allotted to other members.
Asked whether he expected his nomination as a member of the apex body, Bhan admitted d that "nomination was a big surprise for me." In reply to a question he said that he was not going to shift to New Delhi but as a member of the National Security Advisory Board he would be attending its meetings whenever and wherever held. He said he was grateful to his friends and well-wishers for their blessings.
Government sources said that Bhan has been nominated to the apex board on the basis of his expertise he had gained while handling law and order issues in Jamm and Kashmir. As chief of intelligence agency he had been instrumental in laying important guidelines for sleuths in the department as fas as their job on securing vital inputs on the activities of subversive and anti-national elements were concerned.
There were many retired police officers who were senior to Bhan in age but the Government of India picked Bhan on the basis of his record as the most honest, impartial and tough police officer.
Souces said that Bhan would act as a bridge between the centre and the state Governments as far as execution of the new strategy for promoting peace in disturbed areas in the country was concerned. He may be asked to frame a plan of action on tackling Maoists and Naxals and militants in various states in the country.
