Solar power plant at Bishnah | J&K to tape non-conventional energy resources: Farooq | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 5: Stressing the need for promoting the technology for harnessing solar energy in the country, Union Minister for New and Renewal Energy Dr. Farooq Abdullah today said that owing to its geographical location and climate India has great scope of taping this energy source. Union Minister was speaking at function after inaugurating solar power plant at Sub-District Hospital, Bishnah. Minister for Health Lal Sharma, Minister for Science & Technology, Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, Secretary, Science & Technology, M. K. Dwividi, besides officers from New and Renewable Energy Ministry and J&KEDA were also present on the occasion. The 5 KW capacity solar power plant was installed by Jammu & Kashmir Energy Development Agency under Border Area Development Programme developed at a cost of Rs. 14.50 lakh. The project would provide emergency power to the health institution and also help in easing the pressure on electricity. Dr. Farooq said that Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh is also very keen to popularize the concept of solar energy by introducing Jawahar Lal Nehru Solar Mission (JLNSM) in the country. He said in Delhi most of the people are using solar energy for warming water for their household uses, adding that all the significant government buildings are also equipped with solar plants. Dr. Farooq said that Jammu and Kashmir also has vast potential of wind energy and wind masts have been installed at Bidda in Reasi, Tata Pani in Rajouri and at some places in Ladakh division to tap this potential for energy generation. Referring to the power plants established in Punjab, the Union Minister said that these projects produce power through combustion of stem of paddy. He said that the Punjab government is also mulling to establish a big power plant of same kind which would generate 90 MW power. Speaking on the occasion, Sham Lal appreciated the vision of Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah for bestowing priority to health and education sector. He expressed his gratitude to Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy for sanctioning solar power plants for 69 health institutions of the state.
