Geelani opposes division of JK | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 5: Senior separatist leader, Syed Ali Geelani today ruled out division of Jammu Kashmir. "We will not allow division of the state", he said while addressing a seminar in the summer capital today. Geelani's statement has come at a time when some elements have started demanding trifurcation of the state which according to them was the only solution to the problem. Geelani said the state of Jammu Kashmir shall remain and flourish as a single unit. "Nobody shall be allowed to divide the state", he made clear. " On self determination, Geelani said: "We seek self determination for the people of the state. The Hindus living in Jammu and the Buddhists in Ladakh will also exercise their option. We do not seek it for the Kashmiri Muslims only", he said. The octogenarian leader said the roots of the conflict lie in the broken promises of the Indian leaders. "Jawaharlal Nehru assured self determination fourteen times at various for a. In 1948 he made a promises at historic Lal Chowk when more than 2 lakh Kashmiris were present", he said. Contrary to expectations Geelani did not oppose talks. "We have faith in the institution of dialogue. But it should not be mere eyewash. Let the government of India accept Jammu Kashmir as a disputed territory and as a good will gesture withdraw all draconian legislations. And let this be followed by inviting the government of Pakistan and the genuine representatives of Jammu Kashmir to the negotiating table", he said. Geelani lashed out at the National Conference led coalition government. They have been persecuting people right from 1947. "I have heard people saying that the Dogra rulers were a better option", he said while narrating the events of post 1947 era", he said. Accusing the government of unleashing a reign of terror, Geelani said the police had broken all records of tyranny. "A man in uniform is his own master. He is accountable to none", he said. |
