Separatists accept defeat, ask intellectuals to guide them | Kashmir Scene -- II | | RUSTAM EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 5: "We have failed to project Kashmir as a movement of suppressed in the international society. We have also failed to promote Kashmir in the right perspective in the Indian society. So far we have given only beatings and graveyards to the people. Now it is time for the leadership to introspect in light of our past experiences. The role of the intellectuals is to advise the leadership. 90 percent of the intellectual class of Kashmir is working for money. Intellectual has to side with either people or power. One who takes a partial stand is hypocrite. But unfortunately 90 percent of our intellectuals are working on scholarships. Mere education does not qualify anyone as an intellectual. Kashmiris achieved nothing in 64 years while everyone in the society suffered individually. We have the history and experience that we have achieved nothing. What have we learned from the past. The lesson is that Kashmir conflict is above every individual in the society. We had Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah who undeniably was far superior to all current pro freedom leaders and militancy put together. Yet he could not deliver as the Kashmir issue and conflict was so big and so did not Jawahar Lal Nehru and others. The sentiment for Azadi in the society has always remained unchanged but we failed to address the external and Indian dimension of the Kashmir issue. Intellectual class (should) shape the external and Indian dimension of the issue. Extremists in India (read integrationists and Hindu nationalists) only fear the building of public opinion in favour of Kashmir and that is the reason they are resorting to attacks on our pro-freedom leadership. They do not want us to go beyond Jammu." --- Yasin Malik Abdul Ghani Bhat, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik made these statements on January 2 in a seminar "Role of intellectuals in the freedom struggle" held in Srinagar. "We cannot expect much from a body (United Nations) which has failed to implement its own resolutions (on Kashmir). India and Pakistan have to talk to Kashmiris under international monitoring for resolving the Kashmir issue. "If the UN cannot ensure the implementation of its own decisions (read resolution adopted on January 5, 1949 suggesting plebiscite in J&K) it should be disbanded. The United Nations is a failed body as it has not been able to do justice with the people of the State with regard to implementation of its own resolution. Dialogue between India and Pakistan should be time bound and held through facilitation from outside powers, which would not be unique to Kashmir. Assisting the dialogue process and facilitating resolutions in conflict zones has been done in many places around the world. Bilateralism between India and Pakistan has failed to make any progress. We have to impress upon India and Pakistan that whether the UN resolutions are implemented or not, Kashmiris are determined to continue their struggle for settlement of Kashmir issue and they are the masters of their destiny. Support for the four-point formula of the then Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf should not be taken as its acceptance as final resolution of Kashmir issue. If these suggestions are implemented, or may be implemented in future, it will only be an interim arrangement, say for a period of five to 10 years. The final verdict has to come from the people of the State. The Government of India is buying time by misleading the international community with regard to the CBMs. The trans-LoC bus service and trade has turned out to be nothing more than public relations exercise. New Delhi is suffering from control mania as even the bus service which should have been run by the local administration is controlled by Home Ministry of India. (Those who talk about) "the regional and sub-regional aspirations within Jammu and Kashmir" (are the ones who have been) "conspiring to undermine the dominant and mainstream opinion for right to self-determination." (These are just) "bogeys" (raised by conspirators). We admit that there are two-three districts which have different opinion (on Kashmir issue) but it should not be used to subvert the dominant opinion. Kashmiris have proved that they will not accept status quo which is clear from the fact that four generations have been sacrificed to change it. There are some sections in Indian society which feel that use of force has alienated Kashmiris. I would say it has widened the gulf between Kashmir and India and now changed into hatred as Kashmiris have seen only one face of India," --- Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. Mirwaiz on Tuesday made these statements in a seminar at the APHC (M) headquarters at Rajbagh and the seminar was organized to discuss the role of the United Nations with regard to Kashmir issue.
