Computerisation of 136 libraries in J&K still a distant dream | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 6: The much hyped computerisation of 136 libraries in the state has remained a non-starter with none of them being modernized despite a project initiated around three years back. Even the Ranbir library in Jammu region which has a collection of more than 70,000 books has so far not been computerized, leaving readers with no choice but to spend hours together to find their favourite book. The Rs one crore digitization project to save the rare Dogra era manuscripts has also not been initiated so far. According to the officials, the state government has initiated the process of e-linking and computerisation of cataloging of the thousands of books in the public libraries across Jammu and Kashmir but the project has become victim of red-tapism. Jammu region alone has 57 libraries but none of them has seen any sort of improvement in facilities. “There has been some delay in the full computerisation but we hope that we get necessary help from the government”, said a senior officer from the department of Libraries on the condition of anonymity. Under the ambitious project, there was plan to e-link all the libraries in the state and putting the list on the internet so that people can access the data to find any of the books. Due to the delay in the modernization, scores of book lovers who visit the Ranbir library daily face difficult time to access the data bank to find their favourite publication. “If you scan the catalog and later try to find book at that place, you will not find it. If you ask the employees about that they show their ignorance”, said Rakesh Kapoor, a regular visitor. Another problem which the people face is that they have to wait for months before new publications are made available to them as due to the process of manual cataloging, it takes months for employees to properly mark them. “For last two months I am asking for the book but each time the employees say I will have to wait till they are marked. It is better to buy them from market”, said Dharamveer Sharma. The state has rich collection of different categories of knowledge resources such as manuscripts, paintings and other artifacts that are scattered under private and public domain but as no modernization has been done they are not accessible to the users both nationally and internationally. It is pertinent to mention here that the status and the functioning of public libraries in Jammu and Kashmir had still not been developed in a proper manner. Although a Government committee has submitted a report for the modernization but nothing has been done in this regard.
