| Jammu super-specialty hospital misses deadline again | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Jan 6: Much hyped super specialty hospital of Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu has again missed the deadline (December 31), as the executing agency Central Public Works Department (CPWD) has sought three more months to complete the project.
Initially set to be completed in the year 2008, it is for the third time that the executing agency has sought extension to complete the mega project in Jammu, while the construction work in Srinagar has almost been stopped after the eruption of unrest during this summer.
The proposed hospital, on completion will have six super specialties, including Cardiology, Cardio Thoracic Surgery, Urology, Neurology, Neuro Surgery and Nephrology.
This is not the first time when the government has not achieved its target, but many times before the deadline has been extended to launch the super specialty hospital. Approved in February 2004 by the then Union Government and started during the then Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad led coalition Government, the hospital, which will be part of the GMC Jammu, has fails to achieve many deadlines.
The construction of the hospital was approved in February 2004 by the then Union Government and work on the project was started during the tenure of Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. For the Rs 120 crore project, state has received Rs 100 crore from the centre, while Rs 20 crore were contributed by the state government.
Recently Minister for Medical Technical Education, R.S Chib said that the government has issued a final warning to the CPWD to complete the work by March 2011.
Chib has said that the government would ensure that the hospital would start functioning from June 30 this year. The government has advertised about 2000 posts for the GMC Jammu and associated hospitals through Public Service Commission (PSC) and Services Recruitment Board (SRB) but the twin recruitment agencies have failed to start the selection process.
