Two day workshop on revisiting sources of history at JU | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 5: The two day National workshop on ‘Revisiting sources of history with special references to Jammu and Kashmir’ organized by Department of History of University of Jammu in collaboration with ICSSR began here today. According to handout issued here today, it has been stated that inaugural session of the workshop started with welcome note by Dr. Madhulika Singh. It was followed by opening remarks by Director of the workshop Prof. Suman Jamwal who also holds position of the Head of the department of History in Jammu University. The key note address was delivered by Prof. Kesavan Velluthat , a scholar of international repute who is currently a part of Department of History, Delhi University. He spoke on “Literature as a Source of History: Possibilities of Alternative Readings”. He started by stating how history is a study of knowledge produced by the present based on sources left behind by the past. The presidential remarks were delivered by Prof. Varun Sahni. Prof. Sahini appreciated the role of Department of History in organizing such activities and also laid stress on the importance of method, technique and sources for research in the field of social sciences. The first academic session was moderated by Prof. Varun Sahini whereas Prof. Chetan Singh of Himachal Pradesh University was the resource person. The theme of the first academic session was “Problems of reading sources and theorizing them in their context”. This was followed by the second academic session which was based on the theme “Geographical and temporal context of the sources”. Prof. B.P. Sahu, Department of History, Delhi University was the resource person who spoke on Inscription and their changing Context. He began by stating that the material, content, style and objective of inscription keep on changing with time and illustrated this point by wealth of empirical details from varied region. Prof. Kesavan Veluthat acted as the moderator. Prof. Upinder Singh, Department of History, Delhi University was the resource person for the third academic session and Prof. Ashwini Agarwal, Punjab University acted as moderator. The central theme of this session was “Reconstructing Ancient religions through the material remains”. Final session of workshop started with central theme “Reading conventional Epigraphical tradition of North West India” Prof. Ashwini Agarwal was the resource person whereas Prof. Upinder Singh acted as the moderator. The workshop was coordinated by Dr. Shyam Narayan Lal.
