Soz stresses need for unity of state | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Jan 06: President Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee Professor Saifuddin Soz (MP) has said that Congress party has always played its role in maintaining the unity and the integrity of the state, which is of paramount importance. Addressing a day long convention of District Congress Committee Jammu (Urban) at Mahajan Hall Jammu today, PCC President said that ensuring equitable development in all three regions of the state would further strengthen the unity and integrity of the state. The delegates in the convention comprised Block Presidents, Ward Presidents, Ex-Corporators, Office Bearers of DCC and BCC. The convention was also attended by senior functionaries of PCC, Ministers and leaders of frontal organizations, like Mahila Congress, Youth Congress, INTUC, Seva Dal and NSUI. Professor Saifuddin Soz chaired the convention over the function. Responding to the demand of separate development councils of three regions, Soz said that these issues could be discussed with Union Home Minister P.Chidambram who would be visiting the state shortly. Referring to the issue of 73rd and 74th Amendments in the J&K Panchayat Raj Act and the Municipal Act, he said that in the recent meeting of State Co-ordination Committee, it was decided that a committee would be formed to examine the areas where the provisions of 73rd Amendment need to be incorporated in the state Panchayat Raj Act. The committee would submit its report within a period of one month. The issue of 74th Amendment which pertains to Municipal Bodies, would also be discussed later. He said that in order to encourage honest and capable people to Panchayats, he had viewed that elections to Panchayats should be held on non-party basis, however final decision would be taken in consultation with senior party colleagues. Appreciating the District Congress Committee and its president Shri Om Chopra for raising various issues of public concern in the resolution, Soz said that issues like fly-over in Jammu city, problem of public distribution system, rehabilitation of refugees, removal of unauthorized encroachments, setting up of colonies for house less people and removal of disparities in the wages of the PHE workers. He suggested that to deal with traffic problem and make the life of people comfortable, he would raise the demand for starting metro service in Jammu and Srinagar cities with Union Railway Ministry and hoped that it would be become a reality, as Congress led UPA government is extending all-out support for overall development of the state and keen to see progress and prosperity in the state. He also appreciated DCC for their support to the resolve of Congress President Smt. Sonia Gandhi to fight against corruption, Prof. Soz recalled that Mahatama Gandhi had said that nature had enough to meet the need of everyone but not the greed of everyone. We must remember Mahatma Gandhi whose philosophy is relevant for all times, he added. Exhorting party men to unitedly work for strengthening the Congress party, he said that there should be close co-ordination between workers and ministers in order to mitigate the problems of people. He reminded them that Congress president Smt. Sonia Gandhi has always described politics as a mean to serve the people. The resolution also praised the PCC Chief Prof. Siafuddin Soz for his tireless efforts to strengthen Congress and his role as Chairman Co-ordination Committee.
