Omar's sermon to BJP unwarranted | | | Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah, has suggested to the youth wing of the BJP to abandon its plan of hoisting a national flag at Lal Chowk on India's Republic Day on January 26.His suggestion has come after he has come to believe that there will be some repercussion in the valley. And Omar is quite candid when he has announced that if there are some repercussions the BJP and its youth wing will be held responsible.Omar is of the opinion that the security scenario in Kashmir had started witnessing a marked improvement and he has fears that the situation may again assume alarming dimensions if the youth wing of the BJP executes its plan of hoisting a tricolour at Lal Chowk. He does not see any purpose behind the BJP plan when the national flag is to be hoisted at official function in Srinagar at district headquarters and by the Army, police and the paramilitary forces.Even if the hoisting ceremonies are carried at the Government level in the two capitals of the state and at all the district headquarters does it mean that a political party should be debarred from hoisting the national flag at public places. And the BJP or its youth wing has been following the practice of hoisting the tricolour at Lal chowk in Srinagar during the last several years, especially since the time militancy related violence raised its head in Kashmir. At times this exercise was carried out by the BJP or its sister organisations with a view to project that Kashmir is an integral part of India. But never any chief Minister has opposed the plan of hoisting the tricolour at Lal Chowk by any political party.Omar's prdecessors would see to it that adequate security arrangements were taken in hand to ensure safety of the BJP activists during the national flag hoisting ceremony.Yes there have been incidents of breezy protest demonstrations. That would be all and nothing beyond that.A section.of separatists in Kashmir have been hoisting Pakistani flags during the Independence day of Pakistan and has Omar Abdullah told them not to do it?No,never.During India's Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations supporters of separatists have been seen hoisting black flags.Has Omar Abdullah given a warning to such elements against hoisting black flags ?No never.Possibly he knows that his writ may not run in Kashmir. He knows that his Government cannot stop issuing advertisements to those Srinagar based newspapers that act as mouthpiece of separatists. He knows if he does so there will a reaction all over the world. He knows that he can demonstrate their politiaal and administrative acumen, skill and strength if they order ban on issuance of advertisements to some Jammu based newspapers. No doubt hoisting tricolour by the youth wing of the BJP at Lal Chowk will not bring Kashmir closer to India than the current level of integration still it is mere muzzling of one's freedom of expression if one is not allowed to hoist the national flag at Lal Chowk. In the same way if the youth wing of the BJP does not hoist the tricolour at Lal Chowk it will not snap the ties of integration between Kashmir and New Delhi.Yes,there could have been some repercussion if the BJP had planned to hoist black flags at Lal Chowk on August 14 or on the birth anniversary of the National Conference.Experts are of the opinion that had not Omar Abdullah issued a sermon on the tricolour hoisting exercise by the BJP's youth wing the plan would have gone unnoticed.By warning the BJP against any possible repercussion over the flag hoisting exercise the mischief mongers, who otherwise would have remained in hibernation, have received a hint from Omar's sermon and there will definitely be some trouble or law and order problem in Srinagar on January 26.If it happens only Omar Abdullah should be held responsible. The BJP leadership seems to be dtermined to execute its plan.ArunJaitley has said that carrying the national flag from west Bengal to Srinagar would promote national solidarity and sovereignty.Hnce Omar's sermns are uncalled for(eom)
