Geelani's choice Self determination or unity of Jammu Kashmir? | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 6: Hurriyat chairman, Syed Ali Geelani while addressing seminar on January 5 in the summer capital said he wanted self determination for all the people of Jammu Kashmir. "We want this right for Kashmir Muslims, Jammu Hindus and Ladakh Buddhists", he made clear. Geelani also opposed division of the state. Self determination and unity of state cannot go together in a state like Jammu Kashmir where people profess different faiths and speak different languages. Is Geelani aware of the aspirations of the people of Jammu region? Does he know what the people in Ladakh want? People close to Geelani say that the Jammu Hindus and Ladakh Buddhists will also exercise their franchise when a referendum to ascertain the wishes of the people is held. This means, the minorities will have to abide by the decision of the majority. Or to put it plainly, the will of the majority shall be thrust on the minority. Self determination, as is evident, means a decision taken by a person out of his free will and consent without any coercion from any quarter whatsoever. When a person takes a decision concerning his future, he is said to have exercised his right to self determination. But when the decision of the majority is imposed on a minority, it can be anything but self determination. Jammu Kashmir has heterogeneous population. There is no denying the fact that the total population of Leh is less than the population of Batmaloo or Rainawari but that does not make their vote (if at all a referendum is held) less precious. When Geelani talks about unity of the state, he has to take measures to ensure it. How to achieve the goal? By imposing the will of the majority on a reluctant minority, the state can be held together for some time but for upholding this unity the very purpose and object of self determination shall be defeated. But will it be proper to trifurcate the state? What shall be the basis of such a division? Whether the advocates of trifurcation accept it or not, it is going to be a communal divide. The people will have to migrate from various places. Can anybody ensure a peaceful migration? Won't it have disastrous consequences on the state and the entire sub-continent? Can the people of Jammu Kashmir afford it? |
