| Separatists accept defeat, ask intellectuals to guide them | | | RUSTAM

JAMMU, Jan 6: "The three-month-long violence in Jammu and Kashmir last year was unfortunate and deeply regrettable. Major decline in violence there have raised hopes of a settlement this year.' The three-month period of agitation was an unfortunate and deeply regrettable chapter. However, after the visit of the all-party Parliamentary delegation and the appointment of interlocutors, there has been a significant improvement in the law and order situation. In particular, the interlocutors have been able to change the discourse and have been able to persuade a number of stakeholders to offer suggestions for a political solution.'' -- Union Home Minister P Chidambaram. Home Minister made these comments while presenting the last year's overview to press in New Delhi on Tuesday evening.
"The divided separatist camp is not affecting the Kashmir cause as right to self-determination is the common goal of every group. It is just an opinion but not a fact that disjointed pro-freedom camp is adversely affecting the ongoing movement. We were united for a decade but it did not make any difference to India. It does not make a difference. If we speak from different platforms because our goal is one and that is right to self determination. The UN should set up a war tribunal in Kashmir for probing the war-crimes committed by the Indian troopers here.
It must probe the war crimes and then identify and punish the perpetrators of the war crimes. The UN resolutions on Kashmir are still relevant but they could not be implemented due to countries with veto power. The five members of United Nations use veto power against our demand to right to self-termination due to bias. These five world powers are biased against Muslims and they favour India, which has become a hurdle in implementation of UN resolution on Kashmir. The bias and partiality must go if UN has to function objectively. No resolution will be implemented until this bias and grudge goes. East Timor was granted right to self determination within two years of its struggle just because it is Christian state. The world disputes, including Afghanistan, Iraq and Kashmir are due to subjugation of weak by the powerful nations. This system of might is right prevailing in the world is hampering the resolution of all disputes. And right now the world does not have any unbiased and impartial organization to depend upon. The Hurriyat leaders are not separatists but pro-freedom, genuinely seeking right to self determination of not just Muslims but the entire populace of Jammu and Kashmir including Pakistan Administered Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. We are demanding right to self-determination for not only Muslims of the state but Hindus, Dogras, Budhists and people of Azad Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan as well. It is our genuine demand. We are not separatists because we are not seeking separation of Assam, Punjab or any other integral part of India. Our demand is resolution of disputed Jammu and Kashmir. The Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC) should ask Pakistan to bring a resolution to UN and then support it.
The main highlights of what Abdul Ghani Bhat said were (1) "our own men killed a number of "freedom fighter"; (2) "separatist movement started with the killing of our own men"; (3) "what Geelani does and say is alright" and "our suggestion for a dialogue with New Delhi provokes Geelani, who calls us Kafirs"; (4) "our armed struggle will never get recognition and support at the international level" and "we are only left with dialogue as an option and it is important for world powers, including China and America, to solve the Kashmir issue"; (5) "we killed our intellectuals and intelligence"; (6) "no preparation was made by separatists before taking the plunge in June last year"; and (7) "strikes would not lead us anywhere."
The major highlights of what Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said were (1) "we failed to capitalize the 2008 agitation over the land issue, as also the last year's five-month-long agitation"; (2) "the intellectual class has failed Kashmir, it has also failed to suggest the way out and it remains engrossed in discussions and debates of the mistakes of the past, which everyone know"; (3) "we could not lead the Kashmiris aright"; (4) "we have failed because we look for short-term benefits"; (5) "we do not have the strategy"; (6) "we need to fight our enemy collectively"; (7) "we have failed to reach the goal and at the same time seen our society being degenerated and social moral values lost"; (8) "social and moral values in our society are important than Azaadi"; (9) "United Nations is a bogus body, which has failed to implements its own resolutions and, hence, it must be disbanded"; (10) "J&K is a trilateral issue that needs to be resolved trilaterally taking into consideration the aspirations of Kashmiris"; (11) The overwhelming majority of the people in the state wants to go out of the oppressive India and that only two to three districts in Jammu province are opposing us and, hence, the minority opinion needs to be ignored"; "four-point Musharraf formula is acceptable as an interim arrangement" (12) "those who are opposing our movement in Jammu and elsewhere are conspirators"; and (13) "status quo is not acceptable."
