Toeing NC line, Congress slams BJP's flag hoisting plan | Flag hoisting at Lal Chowk provocative: Soz | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Jan 6: A day after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah cautioned BJP against hoisting the national flag at the historic Lal Chowk in Srinagar on Republic Day, BJP's chief rival Congress lost no time in lashing out at the party for what they chose to call as a 'provocative plan'. "BJP is flourishing on divisive practices... it survives on a policy of dividing the people... they do not do it as a matter of long term politics... they do it only to make a tamasha..." , J&K PCC chief Prof Saif-u-Din Soz said today while speaking to media on the sidelines of a party convention in Jammu. Accusing BJP of playing to gallery Prof Soz said the move to hoist the flag on Republic Day is a political gimmick to gain the political mileage and reflective of vote bank politics. "Let them do it because they like it but they must understand it will only invite trouble... the plan of hoisting flag at Lal Chowk certainly constitutes a provocation", the veteran Congress leader said adding "there is no need for such 'symbolic acts... Indian tricilour is already flying high in lakhs of villages across the country... there is no harm if it is hoisted atop a roof but hoisting it at sensitive place like Lal Chowk will certainly prove provocative to some people... they know it but still they choose the same place". Earlier the PCC chief speaking in reference to this issue in detail hitting hard against the BJP said the party was not following the path of national integration and integrity. "We need to salute our flag... there are hundreds of ways to show respect for tricolour and exhibit feelings of national integration", Prof Soz said. Addressing the convention in which he was the chief guest, Prof. Soz said that Congress party has always played its role realizing its bigger responsibility in maintaining the unity and the integrity of the state, which is of paramount importance. He said that ensuring equitable development in all three regions of the state would further strengthen the unity and integrity of the state. Responding to the demand of separate development councils of three regions, Prof. Soz said that these issues could be discussed with Union Home Minister P. Chidambram who would be visiting the state shortly. Referring to the issue of 73rd and 74th Amendments in the J&K Panchayat Raj Act and the Municipal Act, he said that in the recent meeting of State Co-ordination Committee, it was decided that a committee would be formed to examine the areas where the provisions of 73rd Amendment need to be incorporated in the state Panchayat Raj Act. The committee would submit its report within a period of one month. The issue of 74th Amendment which pertains to Municipal Bodies, would also be discussed later. He said that in order to encourage honest and capable people to Panchayats, he had viewed that elections to Panchayats should be held on non-party basis, however final decision would be taken in consultation with senior party colleagues. The delegates in the convention comprised Block Presidents, Ward Presidents, Ex-Corporators, Office Bearers of DCC and BCC, which was also attended by Senior functionaries of PCC, Ministers and leaders of frontal organizations, like Mahila Congress, Youth Congress, INTUC, Seva Dal and NSUI. |
