Workshop on revisiting sources of history concludes | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU Jan 7: The Department of History, University of Jammu today concluded the two-day national workshop on ‘Revisiting sources of History with special reference to Jammu and Kashmir’. In continuation to the proceedings of yesterday, the fifth working session of the workshop was held today. Prof Mohd. Ashraf Wani and Prof Mohd. Yusuf Ganai of Department of History, University of Kashmir were the resource persons whereas Prof Suman Jamwal and Prof S.N. Lal of Department of History, University of Jammu acted as moderators. Prof. Wani spoke on the importance of non conventional sources such as oral traditions for the History of Kashmir pertaining to the medieval period. He also laid stress on the need for linguistic studies for a better understanding of the society and culture of Kashmir. Prof. Ganai, on the other hand talked about the importance of poetry as a source for reconstructing the History of modern Kashmir. He also referred to the ideas of socialism and freedom found in the poetry of Azad and Mahjoor, the famous Kashmiri poets. The last working session of the workshop was held with R. Krishnayiah, Superintending Archaeologist, ASI, Srinagar circle, Jammu, as the resource person. Krishnaiyah illustrated the details of recent excavations held at Ambaran and Manda in Jammu region. He pointed out the similarities between the eight spoked stupa, recently excavated from Ambaran with one found from Taxila earlier. After the fifth working session a field visit to archaeological sites of Manda and Ambaran in Akhnur was also conducted. The participants were accompanied by Krishnaiyah, Prof. Ashwani Agarwal of Punjab University, Prof. Anita Billawaria, Dr. Anupama and other scholars. The workshop concluded with the valedictory function which was presided by Prof. R.D. Sharma, Dean Academic Affairs, University of Jammu. In his speech, he spoke about the importance of these kinds of workshops for the growth of academics and research. Prof. Ashwini Agarwal was the chief guest on the occasion. He started by presenting his own assessment about the workshop and in the process spoke about its utility for rising academicians. He said that these kinds of workshops are a platform for the exchange of ideas and experiences out of which many academically fruitful things emerge. Dr. S.N. Lal presented a summary of workshop proceedings in the form of reportiers presentation. The Valedictory proceeding was conducted by Dr. Madhulika Singh and Dr. Hina Saxena presented the vote of thanks.
