Sham for stringent measures to check food adulteration | | | EARLY TIMES RTEPORT JAMMU, JAN 7: Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Sham Lal Sharma has underscored the need for stringent measures to keep a check on adulteration of food items. He urged upon the Food Safety Officers to strictly enforce the Food Safety and Standard Act-2006 on ground and ensure safe and quality food for human consumption. The Minister was addressing the Food Safety Officers of Jammu Division after inaugurating a three-day training programme being organised by the Drugs and Food Control Organization to train the officers about the implementation of FSS Act, at Nagrota near here today. Stressing the need for launching a massive awareness campaign for the masses about adulteration and its prevention, the Minister asked the Food Control Organization to hold awareness camps at different places besides utilizing the print and electronic media for the purpose. He asked the Food Safety Officers to be more accountable and perform their duties consciously. He said that food safety officers are dealing with a delegate subject which is closely linked with the human lives, adding, they should fulfill the aspirations of the people and discharge their responsibility with honest and dedication, he added. Referring to paucity of manpower and equipment in the organization, the Minister said that Government will take all possible steps to strengthen the organization in a phased manner. He asked the Controller, Drugs and Food Control Organization to submit a proposal for upgradation of the Organization. The Controller, Drugs and Food Control Organization, Satish Gupta maintained that 65 Food Safety Officers (formerly known as Food Inspectors) from across the Jammu Division are taking part in this training programme. The aim of the training programme is to acquaint the participants with the new trends in checking adulteration in eatable commodities with more effectiveness to improve their functioning and implementation of Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. He said that the Act has been passed by the Parliament during the year 2006, but it is yet to be implemented in Jammu and Kashmir. Director Indian System of Medicines, Dr. Abdul Kabir, Mission Director, NRHM, Dr Yashpal Sharma, Director Floriculture, Jammu, K.K.Sharma, Deputy Controller Drug and Food Control, Lotika Khajuria were also present.
