Gender budgeting vital to women empowerment: Shabir | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan 7: Describing gender budgeting as a potent tool in empowering the womenfolk socially, economically and politically, Minister of State for Forests and Power, Shabir Ahmad Khan today said this step of the Government will also help the women to participate in the development process of the State. The Minister was addressing a workshop-cum-training programme on gender budgeting for officers at Rajouri today. The Minister stressed the need for exploring the potential areas where women can contribute better services for welfare of the society. He also exhorted for specific spheres related to women upliftment to be looked into while formulating gender budgeting. Speaking on the occasion, Chairman State Commission for Women, Shamima Firdous said that gender budgeting that acknowledges the gender patterns in the society and allocates money to implement policies and programmes, will change these patterns that move towards a more gender equal society. She said that achievement of human development is heavily dependent on development and empowerment of 496 million women and girls who according to 2001 census account for 48% of population of the country. She said that gender budgeting can help to improve economic government and financial management. It will also provide feedback to the government on whether it is meeting the need of different groups of women and men.
