UDHAMPUR, Jan 7: Tension gripped the town today after people burnt Scorpio jeep of two youth who allegedly tried to abduct two school girls from the main bazar of the town.
One of them, whom police sources identified as Rajan Dogra alias Ishu of Shakti Nagar, Jammu, was apprehended by police from the town suburbs late tonight while his accomplice, Vicky, who too hailed from Shakti Nagar, was absconding.
Sources said the duo stopped their Scorpio (JK02AE/2021) in the main bazar of the town in the evening and attempted to kidnap two school girls who were returning homes after taking their tution classes in Lambi Gali. The abduction bid was, however, foiled by some vigilant locals after the girls raised an alarm. The people gave a severe thrashing to the accused, who later fled the spot, the sources added.
The matter was immediately brought to the notice of Udhampur police station by the people, but when no cop reached the spot for nearly an hour, the anger flared up with the people holding anti-police demonstration at Gole Market.
They then burnt the Scorpio. Some locals said police and fire brigade arrived only on the intervention of deputy commissioner who was approached by them. Sources said had the flames emanating from the scorpio not been controlled by the firemen on time, these could have engulfed the nearby shops.
SSP, Udhampur, later reached the spot and tried to pacify the people, but the latter raised slogans in his presence too. After a lot of persuation by the SSP, the protesters agreed to disperse but warned to resume their strike Saturday if the accused were not held by tomorrow noon.Sources said a police team led by Udhampur police station SHO, Inspector Arvind Sambyal was able to apprehend Ishu from the town suburbs late tonight.
Raids were being conducted to nab Vicky, the sources added.
