EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Jan 7: Things in Jammu may assume dangerous proportions if the Kashmiri separatists continue to air provocative views. For, their views seek to create an impression that they represent the general will of the people of the state and that what they are saying is what the people of the state vouch for.
Take, for example, the views of APHC (M) chairman. He has said that (Those who talk about) "the regional and sub-regional aspirations within Jammu and Kashmir" (are the ones who simply) "conspire to undermine the dominant and mainstream opinion for right to self-determination"…(The regional and sub-regional aspirations are no more than) "bogeys" (raised by conspirators and vested interests)…We admit that there are two-three districts in Jammu province which have different
opinion (on Kashmir issue) but it should not be used to subvert the dominant opinion." APHC (G) chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani has also aired similar views. He has said:
"The Hurriyat leaders are not separatists but pro-freedom, genuinely seeking right to self determination for not only Muslims of the state but Hindus, Dogras, Buddhists and people of Azad Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan as well. It is our genuine demand."
What they have said simply means that they want to force down the throat of the already persecuted and discriminated minorities in the state their perverted , anti-India and communal ideology and further strengthen their stranglehold over the entire population of the state. Even the attitude of leaders the parties like the NC,
the PDP, the CPI and the CPI-M is no different. They, like the separatists of all hues, oppose the reorganization of the state and want to impose their autonomy and self-rule formulas, which the minorities in the state abhor and vehemently oppose on the ground that there is no fundamental difference between what the separatists have been demanding and what other leaders in Kashmir are insisting on.
It is this attitude that is provoking the people of Jammu province and Ladakh. There are potent reasons to believe that Jammu would retaliate. And, if it happens, the results can be disastrous. The so-called mainstream Kashmiri leaders know everything from the past experiences.
The people of Jammu and Ladakh can do with the discriminatory policies as are being ruthlessly pursued by the NC-led government. In fact, they have suffered immensely
during all these years of independence because the discriminatory policies in what certain parties call the "national interest", but they have never abandoned their
basic ideology and their basic ideology is complete identification with New Delhi and shape their destiny under the Indian Constitution. They have never ever compromised
their their commitment to India, notwithstanding the fact that New Delhi, like the Kashmiri leaders and their cronies in Jammu, have consistently ignored and humbled them. The fact of the matter is that the people of Jammu and Ladakh just can't digest anything that, they feel, is aimed at driving them away from New Delhi.
Kashmiri leaders, separatists or otherwise, need to take cognizance of the feelings and fury of Jammu. It is in their interest. As for Jammu and Ladakh, they are determined to achieve their most cherished goal - complete identification with New Delhi and full political empowerment. Jammu and Ladakh are distinct identities and personalities and integral part of the Indian society. It is a fact and the sooner it is recognized the better.
