Early Times Report
Jammu,January 7 :- Several leaders belonging to the state unit of the Congress are said to have conveyed to the party high command that they were not opposed to the continuation of the present political arrangement,Congress-National Conference alliance,in Jammu and Kashmir but the way the NC leadership was trying to ignore the partner in power could cause major erosion to the Congress, especially in the Jammu region which is the main region of its influence.
Party sources said that if a number of congress leadaers, including former Deputy Chief Minister,Mangat Ram Sharma, had demanded rotational chief ministership it was the result of their worries over gradual erosion the Congress was facing in the state.
The sources said that the congress leaders have suggested to the party high command to rest at rest speculation on the future role of PCC Chief,Saif-ud-Din Soz.They said that dissidents had started getting encouraged with reports indicating that Soz may be replaced by a dissident leader as PCC Chief. The state Congress leaders are deadly oppposed to any change in the PCC setup at this juncture on the plea that Soz has been able to keep the Congress flag flying despite anti-party activities being carried out by the dissidents.
The Congress leaders believe that Soz as PCC Chief has been trying hard to prevent the NC leadership from what may be called "mauling of the Congress in the state."They have conveyed to the party high command that in case people like Abdul Gani Vakil or somebody else from the dissident camp was inst alled as PCC Chief it would be as good as a meek surrender of the Congress before the NC.
Reports said that this reaction from the state Congress leaders had been conveyed to the party high command after reports had reached Jammu that the Congress high command neither favoured any change in the political arrangement nor supported the idea of rotational chief ministership. A senior party leader belonging to the camp of loyalists said that "we will have no problem if Omar is allowed to continue for six years but he should be told to take the Congress leadership in the state into confidence while taking important decisions."Secondly the party high should advise Farooq Abdullah not to favour any dissident leader for the PCC President's post as it is an internal matter of the Congress.(
