| Government keen to improve educational standards, achieve cent percent literacy: Peerzada | | | SRINAGAR, November 08 Minister for Education, Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed has asserted that the government is keen to improve educational standards and achieve cent percent literacy in Jammu and Kashmir and several steps of far-reaching results have been launched to realize this endeavour. He said new subjects like Computer Science, Information Technology, Environmental Science, Bio-Technology, Bio-Chemistry, Electronics and Islamic Studies etc. have been introduced in a phased manner at the plus 2 level. Chairing a high level meeting at College of Education here yesterday held to review the achievements under Education sector, the minister said thrust has been laid to consolidate the education infrastructure and extend better facilities to the people in the state. He said computer systems and generator sets have been provided to 100 higher secondary schools from November last to October this year. During this period, 268 primary and 28 middle schools and 487 additional classrooms have been completed under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) in the state during this period. Director Education, Mr. Mohammad Rafi, State Project Director SSA and all the Chief Education Officers, Principals of District Institutes of Education and District Planning Officers attended the meeting. Senior Consultant for SSA, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Dr. Anapriya Chada was the special invitee in the meeting and gave a presentation on planning and appraisal of SSA. Peerzada said 59 primary school were opened under SSA during this period while 17 primary, 8 middle and 2 high school have been up graded. He said construction work of 50 computer laboratories is under execution. As a measure to help children identified with learning gaps, remedial teaching has been organized from class 1st to 8th. A scheme of provisional admission to class 10th and 12th pending announcement of results, he added has been introduced to provide for pre-winter vacation in these classes. The Minister stated re-schooling effort was taken up in the areas where schools had been partially or fully damaged due to earthquake of October 8, 2005 in Baramulla and Kupwara districts. He said 66 school building have been either completed or are under construction in the quake affected areas. About 5.90 lakh children have been covered under Mid- day Meal scheme while textbooks have been provided to 6.80 lakh students during last one year, he added.
