Govt in deep slumber | Vendors, shopkeepers encroach roads across Jammu city | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 8: Contrary to vehement claims of Jammu and Kashmir government, not only footpaths but proper roads in the interior areas of old Jammu city have been illegally encroached by vendors and shopkeepers. In Jammu city, one can easily see that roads have been beautifully decorated by shopkeepers to give proper display to their products instead of keeping them inside there shops. The rest is done by the ‘rehari wala’ and other daily wagers who use roads are there private property and are least bothered about the inconvenience caused to the commuters. Busiest roads of the city are Raj Tilak road, Purani Mandi, Link Road and Rani park area. Here the commuters will find no place to walk. The encroachments are decorated in such a manner that one is reminded exhibition or a sale where commodities to be sold are on full display. Things are beautifully exhibited to attract consumers without keeping in view the laws framed by Jammu Municipal Corporation. The situation is same everywhere. In Bakshi Nagar area near Government Medical College (GMC), you will find that there is a hub of vends with readymade clothes, plastic items and toys on sale on the roads. You will find every thing there, except free space to walk. 42 years old Ramesh runs a tea stall in parade said that he had been working there for the last 6 years. He said “I have a license issued by Jammu Municipal Corporation and being a license holder, I have the right to work here”. He further said that he has made the requite payment to JMC and hence, he has no reason to worry. We have a proper license issued by Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), then how can corporation question us, he added. Savitri Devi is a 55 year old widow and runs a Dhaba outside the railway station for last 2 years. She has family of three daughters and a son. She has no other source of income other than this Dhaba. She works whole day and earns living for her family. When asked about illegal encroachment, she shouted and said that to there is nothing called illegal. “If it is illegal to fetch your children, then I have committed some wrong. But even then, I would not leave this place since this is the only means of living for me,” added Savitri. There are many rehari walas who earn their livings by establishing a food corner or a tea stall on the roadsides on an encroached piece of land. These poor people do not even know the meaning of encroachment and about any regulatory body who keeps a check on this. A local a fruit juice seller said that he had no other option. It’s the only source of income he had. He has a big family to feed and to fulfill the needs of his family; he is running his business from an encroached piece of land. He added that his license is enough for him to run a tea stall and make money to meet the needs of my family. However, Commissioner, Jammu Municipal Corporation Mubarak Singh despite repeated attempts could not be contacted.
